I pass by this building in a not so great part of town almost every night on my way home from work. It's this blaze of lights and color in the surrounding dark. All the right circumstances came together for me to be able to stop and shoot. I did miss the two young men with back packs and in hoodies walking past the door. I thought it needed someone in the photo to give it a story. I added the homeless man that I had photographed last year in another location.

Both of these work for me but in different ways. How do you see them?

The seated man plays a far greater compositional role in the colored image than in the b&w (IMO).

There are no visual clues that the man is homeless. Your telling us that he is leads us, along with your title, in a certain direction, so I'll pretend I didn't read those words

It is difficult to make out the shapes on the wall in the b&w and I can't really get into the image. The color is intriguing for the contrast of the at-rest man against a vibrant and stimulating background. He could be a worker from that store on break, or someone waiting for the bus or a ride home. It's interesting to me to look at and to think about.

The color gives me more to think about, although the B&W gives it a somber cast.

Thanks for the comment Dave. I really worked on trying to direct attention to him in the B&W with the use of light and by reducing the impact of the graffiti. I wanted him to be a major subject but with a more somber mood. Maybe I should have lightened him up a bit more.

Very interesting. I like it. The color version works much better in my opinion.

I played around with it, and if you crop away much of the repetitive wall on the right and also the roof and the dark sky above the roof I think it becomes a very powerful image.

There are no visual clues that the man is homeless... (show quote)

It wasn't important to me in this shot that he was homeless so perhaps I could have left that part out. I felt like the image needed a character for the story and his photo and dress fit the light and location. I could have titled it Hanging Around. I liked as you said the contrast of his settled position and demeanor with the background. One of the things I have learned in my camera club is to try and include contrast in your images and not jut the contrast you can adjust in LR in PS but but contrast in the content as well. As Arsenio Hall used to say...Thank that make you go hmmmmm.

Thanks for your comments!

Mike, I was trying for a more sober tone in the B&W. I am glad at least that come through.

The color version is plenty somber! The color version brings the man, the hydrant and the door into better relief. Otherwise they get lost in the graffiti.

Cropped to roughly 1100 X 620 starting from the lower left corner - a really strong image imo.

I took your suggestion and played with it but It didn't work for me. I would like to see what your vision is. I am always open to folks reworking my photos.

OK, I didn't want to do it without your permission.

Thanks for posting your version. I do see what you mean but the closer crop changes the feeling for me. I wanted the man to be smaller in the composition and I loose the sence of this bright oasis in the darkness. It is always interesting to me too how others see from my photos.
