Why 35mm?

620 was amateur film. 120/220, 46mm long roll, and 70mm long roll films were used for professional applications. They have all, at various times, been available with a very flat polyester (Kodak Estar) base. Some had a retouchable emulsion surface.

120 transparencies were rarely projected unless mounted in glass mounts. Their principal use was for color separations used in commercial printing. For that, they were un-mounted for scanning or direct CMYK separations.
