I recently upgraded from the Nikon D3400 to the Z7 and love the new features. However the Z7 does not have a pop up flash which can be a drawback. I own the SB-700 flash but a small fill flash would be more convenient when out and about. The SB-700 is a bit bulky to carry around. Has anyone found a small flash that can be easily put in a pocket for just such times?
I like the SB500. Takes AA batteries which I find convenient. Fits in a shirt pocket.

Nikon SB300, SB500, Godox TT350N if you want a little more power and versatility.

Nikon SB-400 if you can find one. chase
I second Chase's suggestion for a SB-400. I have two that I carry "just in case." They are very compact, very well built, and very simple to use. One disadvantage to be aware of is that because they are such a low profile design, they sit very low in the hot shoe. This can lead to a red-eye problem, and also to some vignetting with wider lenses. There are any of a number of small adaptors that can raise the flash up an inch or two and move it forward just a tad. They don't make a perfect fix, but do make for a better flash arrangement.

I have a SB-300 for my Df, it's perfect for fill.
Thank you one and all for your input. it would appear that either the SB300 or SB400 will fit the bill.
I had a Nikon SB-400. It's a jewel of a flash and has a surprising amount of power for its diminutive size. I sold it because I got an SB-700 and SB-5000.

Avoid the SB-300. It's underpowered and has a long recycle time because it only uses AAA batteries. The SB-400 is much better.

The SB-300 is great as a fill flash which is what the OP asked about.

And I use 2 lithium AAs in my SB-400 and it beats the pants off other battery choices. chase
Hi. I Didn't read the whole cahin so i hope I'm not repeating...
Godox has a small spaceflight called 350. The tt350 uses aa batteries while the v350 comes with a lithium battery that is good for a whole wedding as a fill flash. It also controlls the other godox flashes if u have any...
Another vote for the SB-400.

If you mount a very small flash unit on your camera you run the risk of red eye, which, can be PP'ed out if necessary.
I now use small LED light, which are balanced for daylight, so no filters needed, and , they second as a flash light if needed. These small LED lights fit into your pocket. My wife will hold it on a 45 degree up and out from the subject, works really great. I can have her move it around because I see the angle of light in real time in the viewfinder.

The SB 400 is a great compact flash, that produces very good light. The one negative I have found is that it sits low on the camera, causing some “red eye” when shooting portraits of people. The other negative is the fact it’s been discontinued, but you can find used ones from time to time. If you can find one, grab it.
