My friend who is just getting started in photography has decided he does not want the LR subscription. He tried to get the stand alone version at B & H and it was unavailable. Does anyone know how he can get it.

Adobe Elements is similar to a combined Lightroom and Photoshop, but with fewer features. No subscription and uses a watered down version of Adobe Camera Raw.

It's excellent "just getting started" software, offering "quick" tools, guided edits, and further along, "expert mode" with blend modes, layers and layer mask capability.

I would advise your friend to forget it.

I know no one who actually uses the $9.99 Photography Bundle who complains about the cost for:

> Lightroom Classic (evolved from the old standalone LR6)
> Photoshop 2020
> Lightroom CC (evolved from the mobile version, this uses Adobe Cloud and plays nicely on Macs, Windows, iOS, and Android devices)

To add, I and probably many others graduated up to the subscription version after realized that some of what I wanted what was missing from elements. That said, it takes a while to know what you don't know, and Elements is pretty darn good, too so you can get pretty far.

Anything he might find online is of questionable value. The software is no longer supported, downloads are iffy on activation, and probably illegal. Then there is the issue of malware. He needs to consider if his irrational objection to a specific method of payment for software is worth the efforts required to avoid it.

If you want to remain current with any software title, it is often a recurring cost for upgrades on a fairly regular basis - kinda like a subscription. The benefits of lower cost, always current software, and not tossing money on old, orphaned software are reason enough to get the subscription. And, btw, in most circumstances, raw converters while quite powerful, only give you a partial result, which can be (and should be) finished in a raster editor like Photoshop. I use LR, Capture One, DXO PhotoLab as a precursor to the final edits in Photoshop.

As others have suggested, Lr/Ps or something else are his only choices.

I doubt he will find it anymore. Have him call adobe. The last update was 6.14. If he is new & just purchased a camera, he will want to make sure his camera is supported by the software he chooses. For aa beginner that doesn't want a subscription option, Adobe Photoshop Elements would probably be best. If he does a search there are some free editors out there. I would recommend he go with Adobe PE because of the amount of tutorials available.

Speaking of iffy

LR 6 from 2015. You have to wait "a number of hours" to receive the key code by email. Item is "returnable" if key code doesn't work. Why would key code not work if software is legal? Does Adobe de-activate unused codes after a few years?

I get Photoshop and Light room for $10.00 a month. It is one of the best deals out there.
