Switch from Canon to Nikon?

So my wife bought the Canon 5dmk4 when her pocket camera acted up. I thought, this is great, now we both have top of the line Canon cameras and we can share lenses and have a lot of fun together. Since then she has clearly communicated without words, but by confiscation, that my 17-40 f4, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and 100 2.8 macro are her lenses, and my flash is in her camera bag as well. I showed her the 300 2.8 I had in my shopping cart at BnH and she said, "I can use that." Talk about a GAS attack!

She doesn't share well. And I will always have to ask if it's okay to use one of my lenses. And she takes great pictures. We go on photo outings together and it amazes me how differently she sees things.

So what do I do? Buy another entire set of used Canon lenses for myself? Or switch to Nikon and learn a new system and get a whole new set of Nikon lenses.

Im just trying to keep the peace, and really, this is a serious dilemna I am in.

If you have the funds, you certainly could try switching to Nikon. I'm sure they wouldn't mind your business. Plus my wife never touches my Nikon gear, or my 5D mk IV either. She prefers my SL2 or SL3 because they are small and lite and still use the same lenses as my other Canon DSLR'S. The last time we went shooting together, she used my M50 and liked it a lot.
My wife doesn't have her own camera bag. When she want's to take photos, she tells me to set up a camera for her.
Quite frankly, it sounds like you have issues that go beyond sharing camera gear.

Buy a Fuji X-T3, and then you can trade off the best tool for the task at hand. The Fuji for light weight and travel, the Canon for low light high ISO work.

Actually thinking about the Pentax 645 and a couple of lenses.

Change to Nikon everything sensor wise is better than Canon. I suggest the D850 rather than the Z7 particularly if you do birds

I see only two possibilities: (1) buy a second set of lenses (2) save some money and buy an Olympus system. The first one will help you if she doesn't really share and it still gives the two of you another lens should one need to go in for maintenance. The second might get your Canon system back if she decides that she wants the lighter system instead of the heavier system. This would also help if she doesn't give you the original system and still expects you to carry both systems for the two of you. One other point: in reality, the wife always wins. You may have to give in to being a good loser. Good lucky with your situation.

I've been waiting for someone to suggest a third solution: get a new wife!

Just buy more of the lenses you want. You have the advantages that she won't complain when you buy gear.

I was loyal to Canon for 23 years - then I discovered Nikon. I now shoot Sony and suggest you take a look at the A7III, A7R4 and A9 - depending on budget. I sold my A7III and A9 in order to purchase my A7R4 and have not looked back; but it is not a camera that suits everyone. The A7III and A9 are probably more suitable for most people.

You can never go wrong with Nikon. I'd suggest the D850.

Buy a Z7 with a few Nikon mirrorless lenses. Then buy the new Fringer EZ to NF adapter for Canon lenses so that you can borrow back your lenses and mount them on the Z7. Peace within the marriage but with a little
Revenge.

Don't buy a Sony. Once she try that she will take that away from you as well. But perhaps you could get back your Canon gear.

You could wait a bit and see what new R series mirrorless Canon will introduce this year. If one suits your needs (supposedly one is to be high resolution, about 60mp, and one is to be a more professional style) you would then have a selection of excellent RF lense that will not fit your wife's 5DIV. As a bonus you would still be able to use all of your EF lenses, oops, I mean your wife's EF lenses. With her permission, of course!
My wife also can see photos I barely notice. Unfortunately, she has little interest in photography.

I don't have that dilemma as my wife doesn't like cameras. She leaves that up to me. She does, however, always wants me to take more "people" pictures

Back when I did wedding photography, I used Nikons. It just wouldn't sound right to say, "I shoot brides with Canons."

I still use Nikon, and have no plan to change.
