Really not wanting to bash a company here, waiting to see what they say tomorrow but it was none of the sketchy ones, I been here long enough to know them. Was not B&H but one with as good of a name on here.

Your story smells fishy.

I’m more wondering if y’all would trust Buying a demo lens with no warranty? What they did was wrong but it will save me $100 in the end.

Or possibly cost you the entire purchase price and leave you empty handed.

Not going to name a company (one of the good guys supposedly) but here’s what happened, the below is the email I just sent them. The demo is $100 cheaper than new just to clarify that part. Would you be ok keeping it since they did automatically lower the price?

Received my order and I have to say I was surprised to of ask for a brand new lens and I specifically said I wanted new due to warranty and resale value and at that time I was charged for new on my CC. The next day I noticed that order was canceled and a new order was generated which I didn’t really understand then I noticed a lower amount was charged to my CC (was charged full price originally) and today I received a used lens in bubble wrap, no box or warranty card which means no warranty and resale value drops a lot.

Not happy about that but I will just keep it and hope it has no issues as I’m sure Canon won’t honor any warranty. This is sad to of had an order just canceled and switched with no communication with me. Lesson learned on my end as I really thought I was dealing with a company that has a great reputation. Oh well! I did attach a PDF of what my original order was before it was changed.

Answer to the title question:
From what you say what they did was unethical. They should have contacted you before changing the order. I would return it COD and dispute any charges from them. I would also report the name of the company on the forum here.

You said you did not want a used lens so why would you consider keeping it?

Sounds like something Adorama might do.

Request to speak to a manager, get an authorization to return it, and a refund of the purchase price plus ALL shipping costs. They did not ship you what you originally ordered, they changed YOUR order to justify THEIR change, and did not seek your acceptance. You are entitled to what you ordered at the price you were willing to pay. No rocket science here.

Depends on the lens history (was it used, reconditioned, a demo?), is there any warranty? Does it look new except for no box? Even reconditioned lenses typically have a warranty. If there is no warranty, then I’d consider it used and $100 is not enough of a discount.

A second consideration. Is it the MKI version or the new MKII? The MKI had a known ribbon cable issue that could cost $300-350 to repair if it fails with no warranty. Secondly, with the MKII now available, MKI values have dropped to the $400-500 range.

The lens is a demo and sold for $799, when I placed the order for a new lens it was $899 plus tax and that’s what I originally paid -$100 for a store credit that I had remaining. Now to complicate matters the lens is back up to $1099 and I’m sure if I return the demo for credit of the $764 then I will be reordering at the now current price of $1099 plus tax. I chose new when ordering because there was only $100 difference but now there would be $400 difference.

I love Canon sales but gee they move prices around (up) at the worst time.

By the way, the lens does look new. Would a call to Canon with the serial number help? Could they tell me if it has a warranty?

We would all like to know who did this to you. Without naming the company, gotta think it's not truly not one of the GOOD GUYS.

You didn't name the company. But, if they were 42nd Street Photo, Abe's of Maine, and Tri-State. Well you just didn't know? I just bought last month, a brand new Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm zoom lens from B&H, a $29 holiday reduction from $306, with a USA warranty card. If you want to get good customer, you deal with good, reputable companies. Where you will rarely have a headache, or disappointment after a purchase. One, of the best companies is KEH. When it comes to purchasing used lenses. EBay is good too. And, you can buy open box (returns) from Best Buy Stores for a reduced price.

Name the store please. This sounds a bad guy not a good guy as without a warranty card $100 is not nearly enough and it was not what you ordered. Request in writing they replace this with new and at no additional cost for the delay and aggravation.

A $100 discount is peanuts. Spend it and get your new lens with warranty and a box.

Agree $100 is not much and that’s why I declined the demo and went new for $899. That sale disappeared everywhere and now it’s $1099 which makes it a $400 difference if they offer to refund me and start all over. $400 more makes me think real hard if that’s what they offer today.

If I ordered new, I would insist on new!!! and would let them know I was prepared to take them to court over this substitution sale.
After all it is not legal nor moral to switch product from what was ordered to what is delivered without the prior acceptance of the purchaser. Used lenses, in excellent condition, generally sell at around 66% to 75% f their " new" price, with box and user guide....
NAME THEM AND GIVE THEM ALL THE BAD PUBLICITY THEY DESERVE.

I’m going to see how it plays out today and go from there. I will update here as I find out more. I did get a “we’re so sorry” email from a CS rep last night but she admitted that she could not do anything in her position and it would be passed on up the chain. The lens in question just went off sale in the middle of all this so the $100 difference is now a $400 difference if I have to return the demo and start all over.

They should make the exchange and honor your original purchase price. Don't settle for anything less.
