As those who own the RX100 VII know, the little popup flash is rather limited in its utility for other than small areas. It is nice for using as a fill flash, particularly using in the bounce position.
After a bit of searching, I settled on the Yongnuo YN560-IV. It comes with a foot stand and the hot shoe as well. It can be tripod mounted or on a bracket attached to the camera (not what I do).
It is optically triggered by the popup flash and by setting the YN560-IV to S2, it ignored the preflashes of the camera. I now can fill a large room with light and produce good images. The flash triggers nicely when placed behind me and well off to the side. It also has a number of other modes of operation and can be used with a variety of cameras it appears. FWIW, I understand the YN560-IV works properly with the RX100 VI and RX100 VII while the YN560-III works with the earlier versions of the RX100.
I got mine at B&H for under $60 (just had a price reduction).
