For those of you who use Photodex products, like Proshow Gold, or Proshow Producer, this one's for you. I got an email today that Photodex Corporation is shutting down after 30 years.

The replacement they recommend is from the Netherlands, is not a one-time fee, but is subscription based ONLY (Yuk!)....either $10.00/mo or $25.00/mo based on the version. I'll pass on that, thank you.

If you have a license to Proshow, you have until Jan 31, to make sure that you have downloaded the latest version. You can use your current Proshow forever, without support, but make sure that you have saved your Product Registration Key, in case you need to install Proshow on a new computer.

Details at: http://www.photodex.com/shutdown.html

I have used Proshow producer for years. I am not longer able to download any of my shows that are on the site. The installer has not worked for me for a few years.

I’ve also been using PSG plus have used their music library almost exclusively in all my shows. The loss of the ability to access their music after January 31 and not having it available from Photopia is extremely unfortunate. I understand licensing, but nonetheless to me a great deterrent to signing up for Photopia!
If anyone knows of a program that has a similar music library or a way to get ahold of Photodex music library please let me know!

I've used ProShow Producer now since it became available, and while it still functions fairly well, there have been some lingering problems that, hopefully, will be addressed in the Photopia product. One up-side to their new subscription program is that you can "suspend" your subscription (once a month) when you don't plan to be using the software. This would work for me as I tend to use it only a couple months out of a year. Also, their lower level version seems to be comparable to Producer, which means I could opt in at the lower rate, then suspend when I'm done with the current slideshow. I always use local storage, so I can't address their "site" storage (didn't even know they offered any.) So, to me, this looks like a positive step for slideshow software, although I'll miss having them local right here in Austin, TX.

Does the program restrict use to its music library or can music be imported from other sources?

An alternative for Mac is FotoMagico. You can find it on the web or at the Apple store.

PSG music library is accessed via internet therefore not a stand-alone part of the program. That means on January 31 it’s gone no longer accessible!

If you have to get and learn a replacement consider any video editor. You can make slideshows and have a new tool in your kit along with it.

You can use any music you have available on your system. I use MP3's of various pieces from CD's I own. My slideshows are few and only for family, so its covered by fair use. If you're making commercial slideshows, then that is an entirely different scenario...

On the Mac, iMovie is both included with the MacOS free of extra charge, and quite powerful. It integrates well with Garage Band for audio if you need it.

While Adobe Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro will run on Macs, the Mac and Final Cut Pro are quite well optimized to run with each other.

DaVinci Resolve has both free and paid versions. Its color correction tools are tops.

Bill, you mentioned Premiere Elements. It has an odd and optional workflow. You can work RAW files in Lightroom Classic with the save to .xmp turned on. Then when you add those RAWs to a project in Premiere Elements it reads the .xmps and applies the corrections.

After signing up, downloading the software for the "Creator" version and then trying to "import" a few of my ProShow Producer slideshow project files, all failed in one way or another. So, if you have ProShow files you want to work on, keep using the ProShow product for a while until the Photopia folks get a handle on what they're attempting to do. (The failures I saw ran the gamut from hanging during the import process, completing "successfully" with no images in the completed product, or the program reported the file was not a "valid" project file.) So, it may not be ready for prime time quite yet.
