On the SX50 there is no problem at 1200mm, it is the mid range that is the problem - 300-600mm. Filling the frame doesn't confuse the auto-focus at 24-200mm and does not confuse the auto-focus at 800-1200mm. 300-600mm with a small object filling the frame is a problem. That always perplexed me with the SX50.

Well, I didn’t get this done today. Aside from the fact that things just got in the way, I found that the lens barrel has no markings on it to show what the focal length is at any point, and there’s nothing in the EVF or rear screen to tell me anything, either. What I found is that the lens can focus incredibly close, but a the lens is zoomed, it quickly loses the ability to focus. I shot a 4x6 photo on a stand from about 8 inches away and it would focus when wide open, but very quickly lost its ability to auto focus when zoomed even a little bit. Then I tried using manual focus, but it still wouldn’t focus. Unfortunately there was nothing to tell me what the focal length was. This was far from scientific. Attempting to focus at 300-600mm eq. was out of the question. The one thing I did confirm is that the P900’s auto focus system is somewhat slow to acquire focus, especially in low light, and particularly if the subject is dark colored. And none of this likely answers your original question. I was surprised to not see any focal length markings on the lens barrel, though.
