Not great photos, but I just wanted to pass this on as a "cute", no, Coot story. Not my favorite birds, but I do feel for them for being Harrier food. We know what is happening when we see a Harrier in the water. Something is under its feet, usually a Coot. We have seen it several times. Gruesomely fascinating.

Checking it out. Keep looking, it gets better. Something made the Harrier leave, I have seen this before.

All the while, the Harrier remained in the reeds, hiding. She let her prey get away. No idea why. Apparently it takes a long time to drown a Coot. Maybe she got tired?

Awesome sequence that tell an epic story. Good images of the Harrier accompanied by an excellent narrative. I wonder what scared her away?

Wonderful Katy! Really great series containing one strange acting hawk and one very lucky Coot. Thanks for a documentary worthy of NatGeo.

I'm glad you liked it, Reconvic. I saw a very similar thing happen before with the hawk leaving a near dead Coot that survived. I am wondering if Harriers are easily spooked? But my sequence of photos showed her looking over her right shoulder repeatedly so who knows.
