I happened to log onto my account with Canon at their website to make sure all of my items were registered. What I found out was that my items were no longer registered. I placed a call to Canon and was told that they had a got a new system and that a lot of items didn't cross over to their new system. You might want to check your account to make sure your gear is registered so that you are notified of updates for your gear. I had to dig through all of my receipts to find out when and where I had purchased all of my gear.

Interesting, but all my stuff is WAY out of warranty and they are definitely not going to be sending update info on it.

I checked the site and also my Canon Professional Services site both seem OK for my gear. The CPS site is still frustratingly slow. It takes forever to login and sometimes just doesn't. For a big company their servers should perform better.

I keep a spreadsheet with a running list of all my serial numbered gear dating back to my first DSLR in 2005.

Happy shooting

I have an academic question to ask. If your "product" (camera body[s], etc.) are working just fine, is there a significant reason to update it?

I believe they will let you know if there is a firmware update, etc.

On a nine+ year old camera?
IF they made an update today, I think I can live without it.

I register my Canon gear just so that I have a list of serial numbers that I can access quickly and easily from most anywhere should I need to, such as when traveling. My info also got left behind when Canon made the system change so I had to re-enter everything. Since the change over I have sold a camera and a number of lenses and replaced them with an R camera and several RF lenses. Adding those to the list was no problem, but, I have not yet seen a way to delete the items that I sold. Canon seems to have forgotten the delete feature. Haven't visited the site in several months, so, maybe that has been corrected.

Edit: Thank You Kenrich 53 for bringing up the subject of registering with Canon. I had forgotten to register my most recently purchased lens. Just took care of that and I see that since I last visited the site Canon has added a delete feature for items that you would wish to remove.

I have my camera S/Ns in "S Notes" in my phone. Along with Credit Card contact numbers for lost/stolen, and probably another item or two. Places to eat along the way to Bar Harbor. Lots of stuff.

I retired in 2014, at which time I gave the company back their smartphone. I now use an old dumbphone that is only turned on when I need to make a call, which isn't often!

My wife still uses her flip-phone.

May I add onto the new subtopic: dumbphone. We've had our smartphones, and my other half left it in the glove box, for more than 6 months. So, we didn't really need a smartphone to badly.

Soooooo, I found a company to sells CPR Callblocking equipment. We now have on on our landline (shocking?), and now a CPR Callblocking flip phone. Blocks Robocalls, and of those that make it through, I can simply add to the "Blacklist" and that call will never get through again. Soo, there can still be something good about the old-style flip phone.

Because of her work my wife would be lost without her smartphone even though for years she resisted her company's efforts to give her one.

Some years back we noticed that our landline's monthly cost was getting a bit north of $50 per month. Thought about getting rid of it until we found a Verizon service called, if I remember right, "Whole Home Cellular". After buying the equipment, a one-time cost of $200 - $300 our bill is now a total of $27 - $28 per month. Price has never gone up. No additional fees and we can call anywhere in the US and talk as much as we want at no extra cost. It's just a black box that you plug into the wall and then plug your home phone circuit into, or, as in our case, a 4 unit cordless house phone. Even if a storm takes down power and phone lines the cellular system still works and all I have to do is fire up the generator. During our last vacation we set it up to transfer incoming calls to my wife's cell phone, which was handy. Few people even knew we weren't home.

I too have a spreadsheet with the serial numbers, however, I didn't have the date and place I bought them. Again, luckily I still had my receipts. The main reason that I register with Canon is two fold. I want to be notified of any updates and also, if my items are stolen, they would have a list of my gear to give to the police in the event I can't provide the necessary info.
