Excellent! You can even see the Drum still in the water back in the background. There was so much damage to both ships from the storm surge of Hurricane Georges in 1998, the submarine was moved on land for repairs and kept out of the water for good.
I always thought that the battleship would be a good place to ride out a hurricane. The bay is not deep enough in that location for such a ship to sink or capsize. (They dredged a deep channel to move the ship there and then filled it in, including around the ship.). I suppose a sufficient rise in water would elevate the ship, but I think I'd still feel safe inside. I wonder what damage you're referring to, and also correct me if I'm wrong about my supposition. As for the Drum, I remember going inside of that ship when it was still in the water. It was so cramped that I don't see how the crew could stand it. Obviously such a small ship would not have the draft of a battleship, and I could see how rising water and pounding waves during a hurricane could cause a lot of damage or even sink it.
Anyone interested in visiting the Battleship Park should check out their web page and click on the links in the pictures of the various attractions. There is far more than just the two ships, vintage military planes and other items such as tanks.

Great post! I remember going to see the USS Alabama with my Dad. He was an old salt. I was probably about 6 or 7 years old. I won't date myself by saying when that occurred. ;-)
Thank you
junglejim1949, Dan5000, dmc, therwol, zgirl! Looking at the condition of the ship from these 1964 images compared to today, I've got to think they're continuing to improve the museum experience. I was amazed deck after deck and section after section of all the details they have documented and explained. If you haven't been in a while
, you might want to take another tour.

LOL Hal! They made a big deal about the mess and the separate ice cream stand on the
Alabama. They'd be willing to 'trade' ice cream with other ships ... Thank you for your service!

We are driving this March to New Orleans from Florida for a week and plan to visit the USS Alabama on our way. I spent a night on the USS Massachusetts in Fall River MA when our son was in the Cub Scouts. Quite the war machine, though times have changed. Greg.
