I have two D300's that I don't use. Tried to sell one to Adorama and was offered $50. The quality of the images from the newer cameras is way superior. I love my D500.

Find out the fair market value on ebay - but you need to know the specific models and conditions of the lenses, as well as for the D300, which although many still love it is a dated camera (what is shutter count?). For $300 it may be the bargain of the century, or you are just buying into repair headaches. How are the lenses - all clear or have fungus/haze? Are they banged up or well cared for? Pictures will tell 1000 words.

Sell to an individual and you'l get more.
They were going for more than $100 in the Fred Miranda Classifieds a few months ago.

the "quality" of the images will look the same at 8x12 and printed at 300dpi if kept within the performance envelope of the D300, which is still pretty good envelope (ASA) especially for us dinosaurs who came up shooting slide film

Honest to God, people; All this agonizing over a gift from Grandpa. The D300 is a fine camera, capable of much much more than junior knows right now, with plenty of room to grow in knowledge. I use mine every day for digital work, when not shooting my F4 or F2A for my preferred medium. The lenses mentioned are a bit of an odd group, but maybe Grandpa can sell one and substitute a nice fast 50, say an F1.4 D, or a decent zoom. It is really all about the glass anyway, not the body. And the kid will not know the difference, one, and two, the D300 will beat the hell out of his Iphone. As for price, ask the lady what she considers fair; depending on the specifics of the glass, $300 may be very fair. Glass costs money, and good glass, regardless of its age, costs good money. And the D300 will accept just about any glass Nikon ever made; Crop factor is an overrated problem, and easy to work around. And there is tons of damned fine glass available out there, most of the time on the cheap because of the "latest and greatest" snob factor, causing those who do not know better to spend a few house payments on the "upgrade". And "heavy", really? This is a mans grandchild; Young people don't know from "heavy"; that is for geezers like me, and I handle it fine. And my F4, which is considerably heavier. Quality has mass.
