Nikon 500PF Tripod Foot Problems

I have a Nikon 500PF lens and have been reading with some concern about the problems with the quick release foot being accidentally activated and the camera and lens falling to the ground. I note that Steve Perry mentioned this in his review. He has also recently recommended replacing the Nikon foot with a Henjar foot. RRS and Wimberley also make a replacement foot. However, living in theUK I have found it difficult to buy a replacement foot from American websites. Most quote 6-8 weeks delivery and the cost of postage is 50% or more the cost of the foot. My question is whether there are any UHH users that have found a suitable replacement foot from a UK retailer.

No I haven't. But your concern is valid. Good luck.

Sounds like you have an opportunity to become the UK distributor for one or two of those companies. Drop them an email and ask them to send you samples! 😎

I have had the 500PF since introduction and never had a problem with the foot. I did replace the factory foot about a year ago with the iShoot replacement that is Arca-Swiss compatible for convenience. Love it, I use them on all my tripod collar equipped lenses.

Ha, Ha, Ha. That is not how the distribution channel works.

That’s interesting. Did you find the original foot came loose. Mine seems very tightly fixed. Do you have to insert a metal shim with the Wimberley foot? If so does this scratch the fixing point if I ever want to replace it with the original?

Hi
I had no issues with the original foot but having waited months for the 500pf I didn’t want to take a chance!
Yes the pin is a bit of a pain but if you watch Wimberley’s YouTube video it’s easy and I have not marked the lens, I imagine if you did it would be under the foot anyway
I would have preferred the RRS foot but didn’t want the hassle of customs charges and also the postage cost is ridiculous!

I have not replaced my original foot from Nikon. Anyone can tighten the mounting handle so you will NOT accidentally activate the release button. That said I usually mount the item below to carry my lens around. No issues.

I replaced not just for the “falling off” issues but to have it Arca Swiss compatible to my RRS ball head

I'm sure a member could buy one and mail it to you. PayPal would work for this.

I have that same lens, and my tripod foot fell off the first day I used the lens. Fortunately it fell on the bed and the lens was not damaged. The Wimberley replacement foot appears to be better than the one from really right stuff that I got. With the Nikon one, you have to keep it very tight and make sure your finger does not touch the release button on the foot.

IF, you keep the securing screw tight (not difficult), even if your finger does hit the release button, the foot WILL stay on.

Yes I bought the recommended foot from Steve perry. It doesn’t have the quick release, I love it.
The euro-market have other company’s than the US.
Try the German site (engl too) https://www.traumflieger.de/shop/
