Rest easy. Most, possibly all, milkweed are perennials.
Natural pruning like this can force root growth. When the plant recovers, it will often come back larger. Look how some weeds seem impossible to eradicate.
To increase, collect seedpods and broadcast seeds. They transplant poorly. Plant natives, not cultivars. Both larva and adults use them for food, not so with most cultivars. They provide nectar only.
Hope this eases your worry.
Bill

Thank you so much Bill, you seem to know what you're talking about! I just took these shots 10min ago. By the way, are you in Eastport , ME or Long Island(where I'm from)?

He will hang in a "j" shape soon, and turn into a green and gold chrysalis. After about 12 days, he will emerge a beautiful Monarch.

He looks like a nice plump one, Gary. I have a few chrysalis right now and most of my milkweeds are just nubs. If you are lucky enough to have a plant go to seed, you will have new milkweed plants everywhere.

Definitely a Monarch. It looks like it is about to go into J-Hook. The most exciting part is when they finally come out and spread their wings for the first time.

Thank you for the compliment.
I am in Annapolis, Maryland. East port is east of Annapolis, the opposite side of Spa Creek. It has a separate zip code.
Born here, will pass here.
Will try to take photos till then.

I believe it is a Monarch based on coloring and the milkweed plant.

Thanks for that info Carol. I just planted that this summer and there are three of those caterpillars eating it.

Nice area, I lived in Lexington Park when I was stationed at Pax River NAS back in the 60's.
