A little road trip this weekend and I managed to visit the confluence of the Mississippi and Kaskaskia rivers. Not exactly a visually engaging landscape. But this is the first place in the central Mississippi valley where Europeans (French Canadian Jesuits) got out of the canoe, unpacked their bags and decided to stay. They founded Kaskaskia which eventually became the first capitol of the new state of Illinois.
