I wish I had $6500.00 available for a camera!

Can a 7D Mark III be too far behind?

From everything that's been published it seems very unlikely there will be a 7D Mark III, but of course, anything is possible. The 7D Mark II was announced almost five and a half years ago with various rumors preceding it for months. There are currently no rumors from the usual reliable resources regarding a 7D II DSLR replacement but there have been scattered rumors that the likely replacement will be mirrorless.

Considering that the 7D series are "Action/Sports" oriented cameras and that mirrorless camera's with EVF's aren't suited for that type of photography, I would be surprised.

I could see the 7D series ending however.

The new EVFs are almost instantaneous and mirrorless cameras can attain much faster frames per second rates because they don't have to have a robust mirror physically popping up and down and causing vibration as it does. There has been no reliable information posted anywhere which suggests a 7D Mark III will be imminent. I would love to see one since my 7D Mark II is getting kind of long in the tooth, buy I'm not holding my breath.

I have seen and used EVF's and find them not acceptable for BIF, Fast Moving Targets etc.
There will always be a delay, there is no getting around it. It can not be instantaneous. You are essentially watching a small TV. Even millisecond delays are ng.

I would buy another, used or new, 7D MK II if the only other option was a mirrorless. For what it was designed for, it is truly an outstanding camera.

I think they called it the 90D.

The 90D was declared a replacement by the internet not Canon.
Looking at the spec's there are 3 places that the 90D falls short:

1- Body design and durability
2- Focus tracking and focus points
3- OVF 100% vs I believe 95%

These are 3 items that are very important to outdoor, sports and wildlife photography.
Pretty much the only thing it has that might put it in the same category is the 10fps.

While I agree that the 90D is not a true replacement I believe the viewfinder is actually 100%.

My error, I indicated the wrong description. "The 7D Mark II and the 90D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The viewfinders of both cameras offer the same field of view (100%), but the viewfinder of the 7D Mark II has a higher magnification than the one of the 90D (0.63x vs 0.59x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye".

At 48 month lifecycle to next version it is less than 75 cents an hour based on 23 days per month and 8 hours per day... So order now...you will be very happy... I have not seen any plan for a 7D3...

Being an amature, non paid photographer, I need to look at purchases based on what I have and not what I will earn.
This is just too much for me.

Why preorder till you know what the new camera has improved. I can't see having the newest with out giving me a upgrade I need or want.

Don’t take it too seriously we all have to pick and choose what we spend on... I just hope you are happy shooting... I have no plan to upgrade to the III either. It has a couple nice features but upgrading would probably cost me $2000...

From what has been published and speculation, not likely.
But I will not rule out anything in this period of transition, falling sales in the industry and a changing consumer base with the old "I use manual only on my latest whiz bang super AF DSLR" dying off at higher rates each year.
What do new users want?
It is what the industry is working on figuring out.
The 1DX MIII is becoming almost a hybrid with stunning DSLR capabilities combined with state of the art video that no current DSLR or mirrorless has.
One interesting thing is the 1DX MIII AF is NOT fooled by atmospheric heat waves etc. an easily and accurately focuses on subjects through it. Think of a safari shot where animals through heat are still in focus in spite of the atmosphere.
