I was in a cemetery the other day and heard a noise, turned around and saw this blue jay. I had to get my 75-300mm lens out and try and get some pictures. Not as close as I would have liked but would love any advice.

Birds are tough to shoot well.
I set my camera before going after birds so I just point, press and shoot.
They move so fast and go in all different directions so luck will have to be on your side.

They sure are, you really need a lens with more reach than 300 or get lucky, Jays and Cardinals are really tough, they spook so easily, no problem with Robins though,, boring as they maybe, you can invite them to the dinner table and they will come, but try to get a cardinal or yellow finch or anything that has real color or interest.

I practice on the sparrows and blackbirds. Later try some hummers.
Lots of fun.

Thought I would add a couple. I cheated though. . . Shot these through my kitchen window with my 55-200mm. Could have never gotten this close if they had seen me outside.

nice pictures, I need to put out a feeder or something. We did have a fox go down our alley last night. Maybe I can get a picture of him one of these days.

i had to look to find the bird in these... perhaps a crop to make the bird more prominent would help?

sometimes a 300mm will do the job, depending on the subject and location, but more often than not, you need at least a 400mm lens to get decent bird shots, and even that is often not enough.

Believe it or not, but the pictures are cropped. Suppose I could try and crop them more. I was afraid it would take away from the picture. I will definitely keep in mind your advice.
