I have a dog that barks just for the fun of it. I'm wondering if any of these devices is worth getting. I don't want anything that's going to hurt him. The descriptions say that they get the dog's attention and distract him, so he stops barking. Any opinions?

Good morning Jerry. We issue a command to our Golden to “stop” and he has figured out what that means and generally stops most of the time. 😀

Uh! Okay? People talk for a purpose. Dogs bark for a purpose. Cats meow for a purpose. Snakes don’t really make a sound. Turtles don’t really make a sound! Fish don’t make sounds either. At least, I have never heard them.

A dog is barking for your attention. It wants to tell you something. It could be there is someone else making a noise that it doesn’t understand. Or it could be something very simple. Like, thank you for giving me a nice place to sleep and the food I just ate was delicious.

By the way, what kind of dog do you have. I have two. Both are rescued and are trained as therapy dogs. Lucy is 12 years old and is a mix of a Border Collie and Australian Cattle Dog. Bentley is a Labrador and Dalmatian mix. But where are his spots? If you rub his belly, you will find them all!

Absolutely right. Our dog barked yesterday because he had a bone stuck in his throat and we came running because we knew something was wrong.

My friend says when his dog barks incessantly, he sticks his left hand in the dog's mouth, and says stop. He hand has not been bitten, he claims. Will it work with all dogs. Probably not. The dog is a male Dachshund.

I think I'd buy a book on dog training by Cesar Millan. He has amazing methods for training dogs. Or check out his many videos on youtube.com.

My daughter has one for never ending barking dog...seems to work pretty good and doesn't hurt them at all but it does get the dog's attention.

There are a couple of books out there. One or two are titled, "Why does my dog behave that way?"
When we first got Lucy about 12 years ago, she would bark and loved to go out early in the morning. Of course, we thought! She has to do her business before we took her for a walk. One morning, she came back into the house with a dead squirrel in her mouth. OMG! We took her to the vet to make sure that she had all her shots specifically Rabies, Leptospirosis and Bordetella. She was covered and we thought that this was her way of showing affection for us. The vet differed with our opinion. You see, she likes her food but has never seen us hunt for food. This is Lucy's way of showing us how to hunt for food.
Dogs bark differently to tell us something. You should listen to the barking carefully, A different bark means something different. Dogs also howl in different tones as well. Sometimes that are telling you, "Play With Me!" Other times they will tell us they are sad when we go out of the house and don't take them.

SAVING ONE DOG WILL NOT CHANGE THE WORLD,
BUT FOR THAT ONE DOG THE WORLD WILL BE FOREVER CHANGED!

Happy Barking!

I mean,
Happy Shooting!

God Bless you scruples for your big heart. My daughter has 2 rescues. About 8 years ago my wife and I rescued a long haired chihuahua from the pound the day before has to be euthanized. Took him to the vet only to find out he had Lyme disease, a trick knee, a bad heart, fear aggression and they had to pull 16 teeth. He’s still with us and the love of our life.

I just remember that a dog asks for little but gives so much in return. The least we can do is give them what they ask us for.

I read an article online a few days ago about a sonic device to stop barking. It didn't give the brand name but, you might Google it.
