Sorry for late response but thank you for the advice. Meter mode just said pattern. I'm seeing family again soon so will try again and try to remember everyones advise :)

Gail;
It sounds as if your camera has you a bit confused. Don't be discouraged! There are lots of us in the same situation. Your D 7000's menus look to be totally different than my D 7100, and I'd wager, some options are, too. If you are confused, and your settings are a bit farbled "Go back to basics, and execute", as football coaches are fond of saying.

Get your camera manual ..I know...written by Japanese Engineers for other Japanese Engineers... , and read about the "Two Button Reset", which will restore the default settings in your camera, Which Ma Nikon has set to insure everyone can get an image, and reset what you think would be helpful to you. Otherwise, go to one of the "pre set" modes...you know...Portrait, black cat in a coal bin, Kids, Mother in law...that comes closest to what you are shooting.

Your local library may have a copy of"Nikon D7000 for DUMMIES" book, or Amazon and eBay will have them. Mine have proven most helpful.
My copy of "Dummies for D 7100" is losing its pages!

Good luck, and keep at it. One day, like me, Enlightenment will gently descend and smack you in the head with her wand!

I just loaded one of my D7000 RAW files into Nikon View NX-i and turned on "Show Focus Point". I can see that the camera used 14 of its 39 focus points. Nikon Capture NX-D has the same feature. They're free downloads from Nikon's website.

I shoot Canon, do you or anybody know if there is software for that.
