Marina City is a mixed-use residential-commercial building complex in Chicago, Illinois, designed by architect Bertrand Goldberg. The multi-building complex opened between 1963 and 1967 and occupies almost an entire city block on the north bank of the Chicago River.

Images captured in this post use the Sony a7II 24MP mirrorless digital camera with a manual focus Canon FD 24mm f/1.4L lens, mounted with a Metabones adapter. The images were captured in Sony's RAW format and processed in Lightroom v6. An HDR effect was applied to most of the images using Topaz Adjust.
Built by Marshall Field & Co. and later owned by the Kennedy family, the Merchandise Mart is a commercial building located in downtown Chicago. When it was opened in 1930, 'the Mart' was the largest building in the world, with 4,000,000 square feet of floor space. The Mart centralized Chicago's wholesale goods business by consolidating architectural and interior design vendors and trades under a single roof.

A 24mm lens provides about twice the angle of view of a 35mm lens and about three times that of the 50mm lens.
The Civic Opera House, also called Lyric Opera House, is the second-largest opera auditorium in North America, after the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC. Built for the Chicago Civic Opera in 1929, today it is the permanent home of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

When ground was broken for the Wrigley Building in 1920, there were no major office buildings north of the Chicago River. The Michigan Avenue Bridge, which spans the river just south of the building, was still under construction. The land was selected by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. for the headquarters of his company.

The 24mm focal length is wide enough to show a wide angle perspective - emphasizing the foreground subject, de-emphasizing but retaining the background (making background details appear smaller but sharper) and creating a sense of presence.
Chicago Union Station opened in 1925, replacing an earlier station built in 1881. The station serves as Amtrak's flagship station in the Midwest, and is also the downtown terminus for six Metra commuter lines. Chicago Union Station is the fourth-busiest rail terminal in the United States.

The Canon FD lens mount was introduced in March 1971 with the Canon F-1 camera. It served as the Canon SLR interchangeable lens mounting system until the 1987 introduction of the Canon EOS series cameras, which use the newer EF lens mount. Over the 21-plus years of production, Canon introduced 134 different FD lenses ranging from 7.5mm through 1,200mm. FD lenses can be used on many mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (MILC) with a suitable adapter. They are a popular alternative to modern lenses, though they lack autofocus.
Union Station is one of several Beaux-Arts railroad stations built in the 1920s & '30s in the era called the "American Renaissance", combining traditional architecture with engineering technology, circulation patterning and urban planning.

The Chicago River is a system of rivers and canals with a combined length of 156 miles that runs through the city of Chicago, including the very center of downtown. The river is represented on the Municipal Flag of Chicago by two horizontal blue stripes.

I was on the river New Years Eve. It was a dreary day. We took a number of similar shots. The blue sky in your photographs look great! Very nice pictures.

Thank you John, Dennis! This was the first time I'd been along the river in the west loop in a few years. There's a lot of sections of Chicago, that if you're not there for 6 months or longer, the next time will have something completely new. The development along the river's edge is my latest example, although the 'river walk' still isn't completely done. Glad you enjoyed your Chicago visits!

Thank you Blair, Bill, Earnest, blacks2, ronsipus! This is the first 'real' shooting I've done with the Sony body and just a single prime in nearly an entire calendar year. It took a few hours until I felt I had my skills back for setting the focus in the EVF and hitting the exposure with just the shutter and ISO being controlled by the camera. The weather helped things a lot too.
