Antarctica Post III: Antarctic Peninsula & Islands are Beset With Beautiful Mountains
Sailing between the peninsula and off-shore islands, we were fronted by the most beautiful pristine mountains. According to nautical charts these mountains reached altitudes of 3000 to 6000 ft. They went from towering peaks and dropped directly into the sea.
Between every pair of mountains was a glacier with a vertical face of ice fronting the sea. This made it very difficult to find a suitable zodiac landing site.
When we found a suitable site we had to climb steeply up hills or mountains on our landings sinking about a foot deep into snow with each step. The ship's crew would create switchback trails to help our ascents. They provided great workouts but were very enjoyable taking us to penguin rookeries and other things of interest.
Hope you are connoisseurs of mountains.
Neat, thanks for the tour.
Beautiful photos! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for posting some good shots. One place I never wanted to go. Way to cold for a desert rat.
I just returned. I loved it. Your photos are wonderful
They just keep coming. Love mountain and glacier photos.
Love the mountains and love these photos!
I missed Part 2 of your photos. I'll have to search for it. I was watching a documentary about the Scientists, Marine Biologists, Meteorologists, and a small contingent of US Air Force, being there in Antarctica. I'm sure living inland, from the coast, on that big chunk of ice, is an experience that none of us will know. Thanks for sharing your photos and story visiting there.
Amazing sites. Thanks for sharing.
