I want to connect my Nikon D850 to my HP all in one PC so that when I do my macro photos I can see them on the screen.

The D850 has a mini hdmi and the PC only has USB ports..........if I connect a a cable that has
a mine HDMI on one end and a USB on the other will this work?.....

If not....is there any way to make this work?

I believe they make an adapter cable. You should be able to get one at your local big box store or, office supply store.

While having a cable to make the physical connection is necessary, more important is having a proper 'interface' that will allow you to do what you want to do. In effect, what you're looking to do is called 'tethering,' and this can be accomplished using a variety of softwares ('interfaces'), including LightRoom, ON1, Capture One and others.

(Though I haven't searched the following myself for quite some time) you might want to do a Google search for tethering that includes your particular camera and whatever software(s) you presently have, or might potentially need. There are likely any number of tutorials on YouTube and/or elsewhere.

Thanks......

Isn't "tethering" when you do it without any cables?

Either/or, tethering is tethering. Wirelessly without a cable; wired with a cable.

<added note:> I don't have a D850, and rather than me doing the research, you'd want to check into wireless capabilities/a sending unit for your camera AND the same for your computer (and/or wireless network you may already be connected to?). Either way, you'll still need the right software installed on your computer (Lr, ON1, etc) that will 'see' that connection.

Two of my present cameras have built-in wireless capabilities, a Fuji X-T2 and a Nikon D5300. I can wirelessly tether either into Lr, and I can likewise tether into either my iPhone or my iPad via one of various apps. Though I've never done so, I could similarly wirelessly connect either of these cameras into any of my desktop or laptop computers through the wireless network I have at home. If, for example, I wanted to tether any of my other cameras, I'd first have to get a wireless sending unit for that camera and link into my home network.

Your D850 has a USB connector as well as an HDMI connector (they are next to each other), so you need a mini USB to USB cable to tether to your computer. Forget any USB to HDMI converters - unnecessary and they are completely different interfaces with different functions. HDMI is a video interface, and USB is a peripheral interface.

I believe the D850 supports WiFi. Have you tried wireless tethering using LR or the Nikon Ap? No cords to trip over bringing either/both the camera and laptop/tablet to the floor. If you don’t like the performance of the built-in WIFI, buy a CamRanger - rock solid, long range, and complete camera control as well as fast image transfer.

Yes. Get a cheap USB hub which will allow your computer to talk to multiple USB devices. The only question is whether the camera or the computer should be attached to the host port - you may have to experiment.

What you are trying to do is what is known as shooting tethered. It is common amongst professional photographers. You will need software on your laptop. Capture One works well. Nikon has an app but it does not have a good reputation.

I have a D7200 and the Nikon wmu app. It has worked flawlessly for me. Now I've heard bad things about snapbridge but I have not used it. Wmu allows me to see my shots and control my camera from my computer. I use it in the summer to take hummingbird shots. Camera outside on a tripod me watching TV and my computer screen. I hit the shutter when a good shot appears on the monitor.

I use the USB 3 port in the camera connected to whatever uses the same USB 3 HUB or straight to a PC.

You cannot have two connections at the same time from or to the camera as far as I know.

Once tethered you can use any software to capture anything from the camera. The limits are imposed by the software.

DigiCamControl is one of the best free software around to control a camera (or more)

Take a look at Nikon's Camera ControlPro 2 - You tether it to your computer and it allows complete control of the camera from your computer. When you shoot you will see your image on your compute scree n. If you have it an want, it can be displayed by Nikon's View-NX. You choice to save is a card, a card and your computer and your computer.

ControlPro is, I believe $149, View free.

Use DigiCam Control on PC tethered to the camera. You can control the camera and have live view on monitor and save images directly to folder on PC in addition to the in-camera card.

This is how I have my D850 & Miops working.
You can use Lightroom for software. Newest version works ok. Older versions unreliable.
I teather with Capture One.
Other software might work as suggested but you will still need these cables.
