Thoughtful Bulletin Article

An interesting read.

Since the Bulletin’s first issue in 1945, the publication started by scientists hoping to focus the world’s attention on the dangers of nuclear weapons has been expanding its scope. These days you’re just as likely to find exclusive climate change coverage as you are to read about new and ill-conceived ventures in the nuclear weapons space. A relatively new focus at the Bulletin involves what we call disruptive technologies. From artificial intelligence (AI) to new gene editing techniques, many technologies under development today promise unquestionably useful applications but also raise thorny ethical and practical questions and the possibility of misuse. Some use cases, in fact, seem only to help spread disinformation, raise the risk of war, or contribute to greater inequality.

There’s been quite a lot to talk about under this umbrella of disruptive technologies, and over the last year, the Bulletin has done just that. From an explosion at a Russian disease research center that houses the smallpox virus to a proposal to allow AI to be used in the command and control system for nuclear weapons, Bulletin authors ranged across the disruptive tech landscape. Here are six stories that are among the best we published in 2019.

The Story about Global Pandemics is especially interesting and terrifying...I have read some books about the Russian Biological Warfare Research Laboratories and the United States Biological Warfare Research Laboratories....I personally and this is just my opinion feel a Bird Flu Virus World Pandemic is imminent...Why, because we can blame it on Nature, develop the Virus in the Lab along with the Vaccine and then after vaccinating the chosen few spread the Virus all over the World...Billions will die destroying whole Families and the Stock Market will crash, Homes and Farms and Businesses will come up for sale for pennies and the Vultures who started the Pandemic will swoop in buying up real estate, farms and ranches, businesses, stocks and bonds for pennies and then rolling out the vaccine which they had all along, looking like Heroes, and making a fortune on the vaccine as the World recovers and the real estate, farms and ranches, businesses and stocks and bonds they bought for pennies will skyrocket in value...a Global Pandemic does not destroy infrastructure just people and since this will not only be the greatest die off of humans in human history it will also be the greatest transfer of wealth in human history which is exactly why it will probably happen...

As the Andromeda Strain and others (Contagion, Outbreak, 28 Days Later, etc.) Most Zombie movies start with this theme. Do a search on Google for pandemic science fiction movies and you will find a long list. Wikipedia lists 85. Don't know what the oldest one was. There is a medical discussion of various outbreak movies at https://academic.oup.com/cid/article/37/7/939/422604

Given human history that such a disaster could happen is not surprising. Best we can do is spiritually prepare for the next life.
