can anyone tell me why a photo of the Rhine River is one of the most expensive photos ever sold. To me it is quite ordinary and uninteresting.
Some people have more money than sense.

Have you seen the size and scale of it? About 10 feet wide. You can count every blade of grass along the river, both sides.

Also, it is photography trying to emulate painting. As in the painters of the sixties.
Besides scale it is important to note that this is an invented scene by Gursky. Nowhere along the Rhine looks like this. He took removed many buildings and other things in constructing this minimalist reality. The image reminds me of non-objective and color field paintings.
While I understand the concept and appreciate the image, I cannot defend the valuation. It is absurd but then as we know the art market is a truly absurd place.
It is up to artists to succumb to this insanity but to tear it down and build something new.
A fool is soon parted from his money!
And a sucker is born every day!
One needs to stand in front of it to truly appreciate its magnificence. It is a fairly large print. Viewing it on a computer monitor just won't do. Perhaps $4.3 million for this work is too much... but apparently someone wanted it bad enough to pay that kind of money for it, and had the means to make the purchase.
Personally, I like it. It's certainly not the most amazing photo I've ever seen. However, I do find its daring approach to simplicity and the serenity it projects to be highly effective. When it comes to photography, I've never been a fan of overly busy images.
Also, it was made in 1999. Think of the state of photography then.
We won't know if it was worth the sale price till it is resold in the future.

Perhaps you might like this one better. Same year. Also, very big, 9 or 10 ft.
Looks like a cellphone pic to me. Know matter how large you make it.
Everything different is always scary to the masses, it’s the way it is....You can substitute many WORDS for scary.
I took a similar River photo not that long ago. I’ll let it go for only $2.1 million. Pm me if interested.

Sounds like a good deal, but I would need to see it first...hint, similar never gets the prize.
So if you think that’s crazy I guess you missed the banana taped to a wall that went for $120,000 or something crazy. Then some random guy came along and ate it lol.
