Its been a long quest with a hundred thousand +/-(not to mention film) of photos taken from a D100 to a D300 and finally, I've got my hands on a low shutter count D700 at 375 shutter count for $375.00 a dream come true. The book I've been trying to find a Thom Hoggan's book "Complete Guide to the Nikon D700" and can't find it on eBay or Thom web site. On is site he pretty much drops the D700, won't even talk about it in favor of the D750. Now mind you I would have liked a D750, it is much ahead of the D700 but not everyone can afford the extra $$ difference to get a low count D750 and I'm very disappointed at Thom Hoggan's boohooing the D700 by not even mentioning it anywhere on his web site and not even providing a download of is book so people like me can still put it to good use. I look up to professional knowing people so I may better my photography. I think of myself as a semy professional photographer since I've been doing this for over 60 years, (pro make money, I don't) I'm not stupid at it. But everyone is saying how good this book is and if it's that good then where is it..?

Go to Thom's site, select books, select older DSLR's. The 700 guide is there.

I don't even find it on Ebay... I do find David Busch's Digital Photography Guide D700, however.

Busch books are primo. Always dedicated
to the camera in the title ... IOW they are
not 2/3 generic basic photo, like so many
other "camera guides" that are only 1/3
about the particular camera in the title.

Bag that Busch before it disappears !

And oh yeah, Santa was good to you !
Congratz on your find. 375 clicks :-)

geodowns the D700 is an epic piece of kit...
It's ergonomics are absolutely superb!
While over a decade old it is still widely used by wedding shooters...
The only limitation is it's single card slot...
Keep in mind it is actually a D3 upgrade (better menu layout and features)
There is actually a hack to pull up LiveView via the Function Button which beats the hell out the older D3!

Ok, I got luck just like you... but paid $700 for one in exceptional condition (2700 clicks)
LOVE it soooo much... use it all the time for testing glass and scouting new venues...

Forget Hoggan's book...
This is a far better training tool for the D700
Introduction to the Nikon D300 & D700 Volume 2: Advanced Topics by Blue Crane Digital (Tutorial DVD)
You might consider getting this DVD also however it is indeed rather basic.
Blue Crane Digital DVD: Nikon D300/D300S/D700 Digital SLR Camera (Volume 1: Basic Controls)

You'll have to search the web for both... I found both DVD's from $18 to $24... Even B&H carries them.

Ok how good is the D700...
Below are images I did last summer when I got mine...

btw, found a vintage lens to go with it in a locale camera shop (old unsold stock)...
AF 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D Nikkor (circa 1996)
Open box (brand new!) that bought for a little over $100
I'm a happy camper! Enjoy your D700!

Thank You so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. I have a 24-85mm (japan) FX lens that I was using on my D300 before I got the D700. I really like the picture you send, love the skin tone is perfect.

Had to watch ebay for a year before I saw Thom Hogan's book for the Nikon F6. And then it was the CD only.
Set up a saved search, and watch out for all of Ben Hogan golf books. :)

Also, Rocky Nook seems to still have print and digital copies of "Mastering the Nikon D700" by Darrell Young.
Amazon may still have printed copies.

My niece is a NIKON professional and she has 2 - D700's. The original has 352,000 shutter clicks on it and the other has 95,000. She loves them and has returned D750 & D850's back to Nikon.

Everybody has their personal favorites. I prefer Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas. Most likely out of print by this time but, IMHO, a better buy than Hogan's or Busch's offerings.

I bought Darrell Young’s guide for the D7000. I highly recommend him. I tried to get his guide to the D7500
but he didn’t put one out.....his publishers decision, not his.

Hi geodowns,
I'm a D700 fan after having shot the D200 & D300. As far as general shooting goes, the D700 isn't much different from the D300 except you'll want FX lens if you don't already have them. I like my D700 so much I moved my D750 out-of-the-studio to use as my field camera and replaced it with a low-shutter-count D700. Understand, my studio is for shooting product and magazine illustrations that are seldom published in a size any larger than 4" wide by ???. but do sometimes end up as a 2-page spread (11 x 17 give or take). Bottom line to me, the D700 is a great camera. I sure love mine! Take care & ...
