The Bonnet Carre Spillway is a Mississippi River flood control structure located 31 miles up river from New Orleans. High water in the spring may trigger opening of the spillway to divert water to Lake Pontchartrain. Bald eagles and numerous wading birds can be seen in the cypress swamp areas in the spillway.
