I investigated the auto white balance performance of my recently acquired Sony RX100 VII. My interest was primarily how well the AWB performed in mixed light sources, say tungsten, fluorscent, and sunlight.
To first order, the AWB did a fair job in several tests. Next, I took the same photos using the custom WB feature. To perform the custom WB, I held my Expodisc over the lens and set the custom white balance. I used the camera with Expodisc as an incident light meter, i.e., I set the WB with the camera at the subject and aimed in the direction of my shooting location. The histogram RGBW were all in perfect alignment.
The custom WB in each case produced superior images compared to the AWB images. Superior means that what I saw with my eye was essentially the same as the custom WB images.
When used in non-mixed light sources, the difference between custom and auto WB images was minimal.
Of course, WB affect only the jpeg, not the RAW files. This subject can be discussed in more detail, but that isn't the point of the above observations.
I note that this Sony camera is awesome for such a tiny package. Imagery is adequate for more things I shoot although my D810 still produces better images. FWIW, I use Expodisc with my D810 too.
And that is one way to learn the limits and abilities of your camera. Figure them out and work within those parameters.
