I received for Christmas a Nest NT-530H Gimbal head and the threaded hole at the bottom of the device to connect to the tripod is larger then the standard tripod screw used to connect to the head. At least the tripods that I have. I thought that they were all standard. Does anyone have any experience with this? Did I receive the wrong equipment? Is there an adaptor that is needed? Advice please. Below is the link to the product where I got it at Camera Cottage in MT.

Most spendy ball heads come with an adapter. If not, you need something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Promaster-Tripod-Thread-Adapter-Pack/dp/B002MXO47I

There is probably better out there, this is just an example of what you need.

Note it says standard 3/8", some small light weight tripods are 1/4" but some of them the stud is double ended, 1/4" on one end, unscrew it, flip over and put it back and the other end is 3/8".

My Nest head fit all my tripods right out of the box.

And if the tripod stud isn’t double ended, any photo supply store has inexpensive 1/4 to 3/8 adapters. You’d want a 1/4” female to 3/8 male adapter like this:

One thing that no one is addressing is that if your tripod only has a 1/4" stud, it may be too light duty to handle the head, camera and lens, and possibly a weight hung from the hook (if it has one). This may not end well. I would strongly suggest you consider more adequate tripod.

There is absolutely no way I would recommend using any gimbal head on a tripod with only a 1/4" mount thread. None are stable enough to support a gimbal head with any compatible lens mounted. There are also many tripods with 3/8" mount screws that are insufficient for such typical loads as well.
You can consider this statement as "straight from the horses mouth" so to speak.

Instead of a cheap brass bushing, I use this stainless steel version - much more stable/durable - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Steel-1-4-to-3-8-Rock-Steady-SS-Bushing-Adapter-Tripod-50mm-Diameter/221968149627?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l9372

I have seen some pretty good tripods with only a 1/4 fitter !

Please tell us the make and model of the tripod you are trying to use this on. You may have a tripod that is not up to the task of supporting equipment that a gimbal head is designed to support.

Just get the proper tripod bushing ( I always have a bunch handy for just in case)!

It's immaterial weather the screw is 1/4" or 3/8" as long as they don't have the right length. The minimum length of the stud/screw should be 3/8" or even a tad longer. There should be a snug fit between gimbal head and tripod plate - this applies also to any ball head.

I beg to differ. If the tripod comes with a small 1/4" screw, it's most likely to be a lightweight model not designed for a camera, lens, and gimbal head that is heavy and large. Putting $10,000 of equipment on a 1/4" screw seems a little chancy to me. My 500mm lens cost me 7k and my camera was over 3k and the gimbal head I've got was about $350. I weighed my camera, lens with 1.4x and battery grip and it was 15lbs plus the weight of the gimbal head. My tripod is rated at more than 40lbs so it makes me feel confident it can handle the equipments weight.

Most manufacturers supply a reduction bushing so you can mount it to the 1/4-20 threat of a standard tripod. Check your packing very carefully to make sure you won’t loose it if it’s there. Otherwise you can purchase one at B&H, it won’t break the bank.

Thank you all for the information provided. I will go over the information that all of you provided again and make a decision to go with the reducer screw or get a new tripod that is designed to accept the 3/8" opening directly.

The tripod is a Manfrotto 290 MT294A3.
