Chanukah/Christmas at my sister's
This is a nice group of people. May I offer a critique? While it is important to gather, I don't need to see the food at the table. In part, the food makes me hungry. When I photograph people at a party I don't photograph them eating or drinking. I photograph them talking with each other.
Please consider cropping out the table of food. Focus on the faces, cropping below the chest. As for what people wear, I'm not afasion photographer either. Whether they were wearing an exclusive dead or a Star Trek uniform is immaterial (pun intended) to me.
If my critique seemed harsh, please accept my apology.
Happy Shooting!
Not to quibble with my friend, Scruples, but I think there is room for both the sort of image he suggests and the one you posted. Having the portrait he suggests is a good idea, but if you are going to do that, then I would have the folks seated or standing in front of an appropriate background. For myself, I like seeing you folks at your holiday table. In fact I wouldn't mind seeing some images of you all sitting at the table enjoying your meal and conversation. Now I have a query, you say that you were at your sister's place, is that you seated and your sister took the photograph? If that is the case, then I would suggest finding a place to rest the camera, then utilize the self timer and get everyone in the picture. This might not be what the experts would suggest, but I think (hope) that Scruples, himself, and others would support having everyone in the family in the photograph. Have a great New Year.
