I have a Nikon D7200 and the SB 600 speedlight. The ongoing problem with the speedlight is the misfiring every 10-15 seconds. I doubt it is worth repairing but am interested in thoughts from any photographers who have had similar problems. I am researching other brands but so far I have not found one that I am comfortable purchasing because of related problems. Thanks for your help.

Not the same problem but I have an SB700 and left the batteries in too long. They leaked and it was toast. I sent it into Nikon. For $120 it came back like new, at half what it would have cost me to even buy a used one.

Are you talking about the time it takes to recharge in between fires/shots? You could check out the Godox line of flashes but, check the specks. If your using full power, see what the recharge time between shots before purchasing. You might have to go for a more expensive flash to get fast recharge times. Good luck.

I have both a SB-700 and SB-5000. They're both 100% reliable. I like how the SB-700 has more of the controls on the outside. There's the TTL/Manual/GN switch and the Illumination Pattern switch on the back. There's also the zoom head button on the back. No need to go into the menus for those functions. The SB-5000 is Nikon's most powerful flash. I use it when I need to do bounce flash.

I have a couple SB-700s and love them.
Use on, and off camera remotely.

Speedlights have been a topic of discussion on this forum lately. Mostly about the effectiveness and durability of Third Party Flash units. How long have you had your SB-600? Did it have heavy usage? Any Flash unit will eventually fail, due to heavy usage. But, the Third Party Flashes are likely to fail earlier. Many of the popular Third Party Flash units are Yongnuo, Godox, and Neewer. You, can get each of them for $110 or less. As one experienced uhh member told me on a previous post. If you use your Flash a lot, it is best to spend your money and get a good Branded one. I happen to own a Yongnuo #685 (a clone of the SB-910) for a Nikon DSLR. I shoot outdoors 90% of the time. So, heavy usage of my flash is not a problem. But, if it dies on me sooner than expected, I won't be disappointed. I'll just trash it and buy another Flash. And, in most instances. It won't be worth repairing after warranty expiration anyway. If you are interested in a Nikon Brand, there is currently a Sale on the Nikon. SB-700 from B&H for $296. A $30 reduction. I've heard nothing but positive remarks on that flash unit. Good luck on whatever your next flash unit will be.

The Nikon SB700 is a fabulous user friendly reliable unit...
Totally agree with CO...

"...I like how the SB-700 has more of the controls on the outside. There's the TTL/Manual/GN switch and the Illumination Pattern switch on the back. There's also the zoom head button on the back. No need to go into the menus for those functions..."

I have 3 SB700's and they all work great... Two are Refurbished by Nikon Units (saving $)...
That said my SB910 and Shanny SN600SN (a SB910 clone) both have more power which is useful if you have to overpower the sun..

If you are an experienced SB 910 user then the Shanny makes sense...
http://flashhavoc.com/shanny-sn600sn-speedlite-preview/

Otherwise it may be wiser to stick with Nikon since they provide awesome documentation (second to none) and yes they actually service what they sell (provided it is a fairly recent model).

Bottom Line? SB700 is a very wise choice...
Hope this helps pico...

I agree that they will probably fail sooner, but at the cost difference, I just have multiple flashes, and always have a back up ready to go. Considering you can get 3 Yongnuo flashes for the cost of one Nikon, it's not a huge deal to have one or two in use, and one in the case at all times. At least that's what I do.

Not too long ago, I had a flash go over the side of a bridge and go swimming. I would have needed therapy, and probably a good divorce lawyer if it would have been a Nikon flash, but I consider my Yongnuo's disposable. I just grabbed the spare and another light stand and kept going.

Yes, two Yongnuo's, Godox, or Neewer flash units, for my Nikon DSLR, would be less than one Nikon SB-700, holiday priced at $296. Yes, Yongnuo. Godox, and Neewer flashes are disposable. I noticed B&H Photo sells refurbished SB-700s. Which indicates that are salvageable. You won't see a refurbished Yongnuo, Godox, and Neewer flash units. Yes, anyone purchasing the above mentioned third party flashes, should realize they are throw aways when they fail. Perhaps one exception. Godox is renamed Flashpoint under Adorama Photo. And they may have an extended warranty. In case the Flash fails earlier than expected.

Hi Pico
I use the Godox v 850. It is a manual flash though. The Ettl one is called v860. Both use Li battery that lasts for VERY long. Also it is much easier to replace when needed in middle of a photography job than 4 AA

True, but check into the cost of getting a flash repaired, easier to replace a $100 unit.
I'm not saying that my way is the only way, it's just what works for me. I shoot weddings, and my equipment gets a ton of use, and my Yongnuos actually overheat a lot less than my SB-900, which is why I got rid of it.

For the best performance with your camera buy a Nikon speedlight. If you want to stay with the SB-600 they have very attractive prices in the second hand market. Other brands made to fit Nikon work quite nicely but if you use your flash on a regular basis they will not last long or as long as a Nikon made speedlight.

I use a small Godox flash with my Olympus bodies and indeed it does a great job.

I would suggest you at least get a price from Nikon. Call first, but you will likely have to send it in. If you are not happy with the repair price you do not have to get it repaired. Personally, I only use Nikon units for both compatibility and durability. I have 10 units, of various models, at this point. I rarely sell one because I tend to take some night time photos for clients where I need everything I own.
