I almost always shoot in Aperature Priority mode unless I'm trying to catch birds in flight. I like to get up close details so shoot alot at 5.6-8. But my photography is certainly a work in progress and I'm still learning!

It all depends on what I am trying to achieve:
.
#1 Great dof F-6.1mm @ f8
(

I normally choose aperture priority mode in 80-85% of my images unless I
want to reduce or eliminate motion, or if the lighting conditions are extreme.
What I've learned over the years is that each lens has a range of "sweet" spots
where your focus is tack sharp, and with both of my lenses, that is normally
between f/8 and f/16. I will venture into smaller apertures, but normally only
when shooting panos.
Be sure to compare the depth of field on the last two images. They were shot from
the same distance, using the same lens and lighting conditions. The only difference
is the aperture setting. On the first, the smaller aperture gives much more depth
of field, while the second one was taken with the lens wide open and shows a much
shallower depth of field.

These are excellent images, Richard, and makes me
wish Santa had brought me a faster lens! I'd love
to have something in the f/1.8-f/2 range...sigh
