Depends on what gear you want to carry.

Instead of the backpack which I never had I found myself a small and cheap duffel bag. I lined the sides and bottom with foam rubber and created my own pockets and slots for lenses. The zippered section held my manuals, filters etc. I travelled with it and it didn’t shout “ camera bag” to anyone around.
I’ve also seen some larger coolers outfitted as a tote bag for equipment. Takes a little time and ingenuity but you have things just the way you want them at a reduced cost
Thrift stores also have some camera bags you might use.
Hope this is a little help to avoid some high costs.

You might want to check out the Thinktank line of bags. They are well made and reasonably priced. I have several for my mirrorless cameras.
Out of all the camera bags I have, they are my favorite ones.

It worked out great as it has top access without opening the flap. I do like it a lot.
It should fit under an airplane seat also as long as you don't over-stuff it.
BUT, if you have anything small, like keys, if you don't put them in one of the zippered pockets, they can fall out when the bag is turned upside-down, like at airport security screening...
The top is a flap and does not seal (by zipper) on the sides.

I carried two spare batteries, battery charger, a filter pouch, angle finder, 50mm lens and the camera with an 18-200mm lens. Plus little stuff in the zipper pouches.

Bill, I usually carry a backpack with two Nikon's with lenses attached, two extra lenses, flash, and extra stuff. But sometimes I just want to take one camera with lens attached, a tablet and a couple filters. I've looked at several bags for this and haven't found one I like. I think I like this one. I'm not the op, but thanks for the idea.

To the op, I use a back pack and love it for caring a lot. Will fit under seat I'm plane I think. Without a tripod, it does not scream " camera bag".

I am convinced that there is not the perfect camera bag. I have several styles but use a Vanguard Messenger bag for event shooting and a Peak Design Backpack for hiking.

I think you are right. We all have at least two. No one bag does it all.

There is no perfect camera bag IMO, but I grab this one when I only want to bring a couple lenses and a camera. It fits well and is very durable.

I carry around my camera gear in a gym bag. It has a shoulder strap as well as a left & right hand strap, and 2 small compartments. And it "says" smelly socks, not expensive camera gear.

I started looking for a Messenger style bag and ended up with a Sling Bag, a Think Tank Photo Cross--they've got 3 sizes. Lowe Pro has a great selection, too. I liked it because it was more secure to my body and had a waist strap to stop it from swinging around while hiking.

I really suggest finding that elusive place the Camera Store, bring in your kit, and try out a few bags. Load 'em up and strap 'em on and walk around. If ya have to go to the Big City, make a trip out of it. If you hate your bag, the Camera stays home more often.

Good luck,
C
