Just got a Nikon 180mm f/2.8 Nikkor ED AIS manual focus lens bought used from B+H to use with my D850. I love using these AI-s primes now own 21mm (zeiss), 28mm, (zeiss) 40mm (voigtlander), 50mm (Nikon), 55mm (Nikon macro), and 180mm (Nikon), all AIS manual focus. I mostly use this type of lens for static subjects with a tripod. I find the 21mm and 40mm great for walking around since I can shoot at 1/60th and lower with good results.
Nothing wrong with manual focus. Sometimes it's better.
180mm test shots from today on a tripod.

The 300mm f4 ED AIS is also very GOOD !
The light and focus on the middle bluebird are superb!

I use the Voitlander 40mm a lot on my Df. I also have a Voitlander 58mm and a Zeiss 85mm. I enjoy using the AI-s primes too.
Whatever floats your boat. Personally, I prefer the trinity for my D850 along with a 200-500mm f/5.6, but I do have a couple of normal primes that are dust collectors.
Manual focus is fine if your eye sight allows it. Happy Shooting.
14mm Samyang ..great walk about ..don't bother to focus just leave it at 10ft and crop later sooo sharp
The Nikon Legacy Manual Lenses were very sharp on SLR film cameras, and appear to be excellent on the D850. I suspect there is an advantage to sharpness, on these manual lenses, by using high resolution cameras such as the D850, with 45.7 megapixels. All of my Nikon lenses are either AF-S and AF-P, and my DSLR has a 24 megapixels sensor. I remember how sharp the manual 50mm prime lens was, on my father's Minolta SRT-101, when I would borrow it.
Impressive focus and composition!

Nice pics!
Back in the olden days we shot fast moving sports with 300, 400 and even 600mm lens wide open and follow focused!
The 180 and the 300 f2.8 were beautiful lenses back in the 80's. As you're learning they look good today on the 850. Enjoy those quality Japan built vintage lenses!
