Canon CR3 files

I recently purchased Canon 90D, which uses cr3 RAW files. I cannot view them in Windows File Explorer. I can open them in Photoshop Elements 19, but cannot view the thumbnails. I cannot use my Luminar or Photomatix either. The only program I've found to be able to view them is the 'free' faststone image viewer. Does anybody know when Microsoft, Adobe, Luminar and Photomatix going to update their softwear so we can open them?

You should be able to view them in “Digital Photo Professional 4” and it’s free with your camera serial number.

Did email Microsoft, Adobe, Luminar or Photomatix to ask them? Beyond installing free DPP from the Canon website, have you called Canon and asked their suggestion for how / why Win10 cannot display the CR3 images?

I called canon and they told me that it was not their responsibility. I should call all the softwear apps and tell them to update it. I did download canons digital photography professional, but it requires saving it to a tiff and then reopening it in photoshop to do any creative work on an image.

Your PhotoShop (Camera Raw, actually) should be up to date to open and edit the CR3 directly. Looking back to your original post, you asked about viewing (browsing) them in the OS and said you could edit in PSE. You wouldn't need DPP as a precursor to PSE-19. Did you ask Canon about your original issue of browsing them in Win10? You said free Faststone works as a viewer. Is this the issue you're trying to solve or something else?

Issues with CR3 should be resolved eventually, some with free updates, others with purchase of upgraded software. When different companies are involved, no one can predict.

"I cannot view them in Windows File Explorer"

That's because RAW files are not pictures. They contain unaltered data that needs a "codec" of some sort to turn them into a picture. I think Sony provides a codec that plugs into Windows. I know Panasonic and Olympus do not. Sounds like Canon doesn't either. Nikon?

Microsoft used to have a RAW codec file you could install. They quit updating it several years ago.

Looks like Adobe does support it. https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

I am absolutely and thoroughly amazed. It works! It has been a very long time since RAW files could be viewed inside of Windows Explorer.

Photoshop works fine with CR-3 files. I have three Canons, M50, R and RP and Photoshop works fine with those files. And you are correct, Windows will now open CR-2 files but not CR-3 files yet. That will come.

I I believe each camera has its own unique version, even though they are all called cr3. I remember when I got the RP, it was a month or so before Lightroom could read the files. Even DPP had a disclaimer that older DPP versions wouldn't be compatible.

You may want to invest on the program Rawfileviewer. It works very well with my Canon R files as well as M50, i use it and works better than any other free ap anywhere. RFV claims it can open 90D also, you can opt no to delete any file rejected until you are sure you want to delete it. It is on special for $14.99, i bought my copy for $19.99 , do not remember. Good luck and happy holidays to all UHH members

I use 'Fast Raw Viewer', maybe the same or different than software referenced above. A great tool for culling. Every time I open it, I'm prompted to download an update, seemingly for any new RAW / camera releases. The $14.99 price, the only amount I ever paid a few years ago, seems like this is the same tool, or maybe similar tools are priced the same for competition.
