😉

Good to see Cardiff University supplying the professorial sound bites for US media. I do hope he escapes OK... there are some strange people around those parts, who insist that the World is only a few thousand years old... bless them.

Every coal seam in the world is the remains of an ancient forest. This example is a bit on the old side. All coal seams are thought to be between 300 and 360 million years old. 386 million is likely within the margin of error. Coal was formed as microorganisms had not yet figured out how to break down lignin. Lignin is the stuff that makes wood brown an is the second most common polymer.

I know Cairo! A friend of mine who I taught with had a bed & breakfast in Round Top with 6 other partners, his cousin is my wife. He got us together. We were in Cairo all the time.
Interesting.

Happy Holidays!

Yes, coal is certainly interesting stuff. Have you ever heard of Jet? It's also known as Whitby Jet, as Whitby in NE England has a source of Jet just offshore, that washes up from time to time. The town there started a cottage industry of Jet Jewelry, which really took off in Victorian times (as our Vicky was a sucker for black mourning jewelry, after Albert cashed in his lunch pail).

It looks stunning countryside jerry, and as you said the autumn colours must be awesome.

Yes BB4A Whitby is a fascinating small town by the sea. As well the Jet being there, it is also has its famous ruined Abbey, and it is the place where Dracula landed in Bram Stoker's Book.

One of my favorite small towns in NE England. Next time I stay at Swinton Park Castle, I need to make time for a day trip to Whitby.
