And it's going to get worse with more and more cameras on the market. Everyone fancies themselves a photographer. There is a difference between a snapshot and a photography. Most are happy with a snapshot.

Acting has over a 90 percent unemployment rate. Unfortunately, she probably is right.

She obviously proved your point . I didn't know acting was at 90% unemployment, so that really shows the odds of photo work.

I retired last May but for the two years before that I've been investigating various aspects of the Photography world, from on-line, galleries, freelance, etc. I ask everyone in photography that I know. I have friends who are on online photo news services and/or stock photo and none of them are making more than there costs. I keep investigating and still see nothing with a bright future. I did get a job one night a week for sports photos with a local newspaper. None of my freelance activities have paid for gas. I see a lot of wedding photographers out of business. I have a friend who was twice nominated for Pulitzer prizes and has stayed in photography but sells real estate to help make ends meet. People should realize what they are going into but if that's what they want to do, it should stop them.

I have a good friend who is an underwater photographer for over 25 years, has been published thousands of times in many magazines, and has always struggled financially, even before the new cameras. That just further proves your point. If you want his website, contact me PM.

You are right. I too did sports photography for a local paper. They paid me $5.00 a photo that they used. I was losing so much money on gas that I quit.

I was taking photos of an event the other day and I met someone who was taking photos and said that people would buy some of his photos. He said he doesn't sell that many but when I looked at them, the photos were terrible. He never moved in close or used a telephoto lens. Yet, some people would buy them. On this forum, there was a guy who makes a couple of hundred a month shooting photos but they are just average snapshots. My point is that I wonder if people really don't care or understand what a quality photography is. Photographers with training or experience will generally take better photos than those taking basic snapshots but they aren't willing to take pay for your skill and talent. Also, most media outlets solicit photos from the "so-called" citizen journalists. In other words, they want photos for free. Some newspapers are handing cell phones to their reporters; thereby, making them the staff photographer while laying off the photographer.
It seems this field is getting harder day by day.
I can clearly see why as a career choice in photography is listed at the bottom.

Lancer w/a Canon: I did look at the underwater photos. Very good.

Stevenelson: It's five dollars more than most will pay, unfortunately. I'm lucky, the newspaper I shooting for pays a standard rate.

The other problem is the internet. If someone wants a photography, the internet has tons they can download legally or illegally for free.

At a street art show awhile back, artists were trying to sell their wares. Most photographers with booths, were more proud of what they did than anyone would have thought . I truly felt my own pics were better, and i'm not close to claiming them as salable. AND THEN , I came across a true professional , the difference was a rolls royce , to a pinto . I even remarked to him what a difference there was, and he just shrugged, and said they all feel if they spend $1000.00 for a camera, that makes them a pro. About as eloquently put , as I have heard.

I think you are a pro if you take professional style photographs, regardless of the amount of money, if any, you get for your work.

Most famous photographers never make much money from their photography.
