Canon mirrorless

I have been using a 5d Mark III for years and it is serving me well but I'm now seriously considering switching to one of the Canon mirrorless cameras. I humbly ask for opinions on which to buy for a full-frame sensor ... the pros and cons of the EOS R and ROS RP. And what advice can you offer about using the current line of lenses - EF and EFS with adapter - versus buying the RF lenses. What kind of photography? I mainly use my 5D for travel and shooting corporate "people" events. Thanks in advance.

What aspects of your 5d mIII are you're not happy with (must be a lot, or you would not think about getting rid of it in favor of another camera)?

I'm not unhappy with the 5D Mark III at all. I still depend on it and I will keep it for domestic projects. I'm thinking of adding the mirrorless as my primary travel camera. The 5D is heavy and not very conducive for overseas travel when weight is sometimes an issue. Thanks for asking.

Have you read a review like Ken Rockwell for the EOS R and RP? https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm

If the 5DIII is 30oz and the RP is 17oz, that's a pound less. But, after you add a FF lens and adapter for legacy EF lenses, how much size and weight have you really saved? I doubt you'll find any full-frame mirrorless with lenses will be any appreciable difference.

No need to wait. The Easter Bunny has
already brought mine. Great as a door
stop or paper weight. But then you can
also weight your papers and stop your
doors with your 5DIII ... which has the
important advantage of it really takes
pictures ... unlike that moving sensor
R-series comic rumor.

Personally, I wouldn't be in a rush. There's new tech in the pipeline for Canon, and Nikon,(others, too) and in a year or 2, the tech should be mature(to some degree). I'm in a "wait and hold" pattern for now-too much invested in EF glass, and 3 EF bodies, to jump into a yet, to be determined, spending spree. Just my 2 cents.

For travel I'd get an M6mkii . Amazing, truly pocket sized little camera with proper small travel lenses or the option to stick a great big L lens on at home. The detachable viewfinder eliminates the problem of your nose touching the screen so I see it as a feature, not a bug.

The R won't give you much in the way of weight savings. My R, with an EF lens and the adapter, is only about 4oz lighter then my 5DIV with the same lens. While the body of the R is somewhat smaller then the 5DIV, with the same EF lens on both cameras the R, because of the adapter, is about 3/4" longer then the 5DIV. The RP is smaller and lighter, so, if saving weight is your objective then that would be the one to go with.
Your EF lenses, with the adapter, will work as well or better on the R or RP then on your 5DIII. The R and RP have a more accurate and consistent auto-focus then even the 5DIV. The adapter is merely a spacer. No optics so you lose nothing with it. I sold most of my EF 'L' lenses and put the money towards RF lenses. Not because the EF lenses didn't work well on the R but because the RF lenses are superb, though pricey. That's an advantage of the R and RP: you can use any EF or EF-s lens as well as RF lenses if you wish to. I also can use my EF 100-400 L II with my EF 2xIII extender and have full auto-focus capabilities. Even the 5DIV can't do that.
I sold my 5DIV a few months after getting the R. I realized that there was nothing that I needed the R to do that it couldn't do as well or better then the 5DIV.
Canon does have some new R models in the pipeline but I wouldn't expect much in weight savings. That does not seem to be their objective for their full frame mirrorless.

Thanks for all of your input. I'll stick with the 5DIII for a while. I was curious and now I'm no longer curious at least for a few months until I can get my hands on one of the new mirrorless full-frame Canons to try it out. P

My personal opinion is that with the current pricing on the EOS R that would be the body that I would choose, but honestly Canon got cute trying to do some nifty things with the R replacing dials and the toggle with the touch bar and that does not seem to have gone over very well. Canon Rumors suggests that the dials and toggle will be coming back with the next release of the Pro version of the R sometime next year. I don't know what your budget is but that Pro version looks to be somewhat costly but it will also be in an entirely different class than current offerings. I have an R and don't use it enough to have become comfortable with the new user interface, but the type photography I do is not really supported by the R, nature and birds in flight, so I find myself still using my DSLR's. When I do use the R I am often frustrated because incidental touching of the display changes settings on the camera or causes an inadvertent image to be taken.

You can go into the menu and change settings so that those things don't happen.

I have been in the menu, like I said I am just not currently doing enough of the type of photography where the R would be advantageous so I am not as familiar with it as I could be, water fowl often in flight. I owned both a Fuji X-T1 and an X-T2 prior to the R and found those cameras to be more user friendly.
