Nodding wild onion -
Allium cernuum - from Liliaceae, the lily family. I like this plant a lot so it gets a lot of attention. I noticed some seed heads poking up through the snow the other day and brought them in to stack. The seed heads are about 1 3/4 inches in diameter and the individual seeds about 1/16th of an inch. A dime in the one image shows the size of the seeds. The last image is a field stack back in late August.
In March I posted a series of photos showing bud and blossom stages and some more information about this plant. As I mentioned in that post, the city of Chicago gets its name from the Algonquin Indian name for this plant,
chigagou.
