Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England and is one of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom.
Work started on Stonehenge around 5,000 years ago .
It was a simple earthwork enclosure where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead.
The first stones are believed to have been raised at the site between 2400 and 2200 BC.
The biggest of Stonehenge's stones, known as sarsens, are up to 30 feet tall and weigh 25 tons.
It is widely believed that sarsens were brought from Marlborough Downs, a distance of 20 miles.
The smaller stones are called bluestones because they have a blue tinge when wet or recently broken. These weigh up to 4 tons and come from several different sites in western Wales 240 miles a way..
Scientists estimate that it may have taken around 20-30 million man-hours using primitive tools.
Stonehenge was built at least 300 years before the Egyptians built the pyramids.
Dozens of burial mounds have been discovered near Stonehenge indicating that hundreds, if not thousands, of people were buried there in ancient times.
Stonehenge is the most well-known of over 900 stone ring monuments in the British Isles.
Cool,
thanks for posting.
I would love to go there. I would love to be there as the sun came up on a misty morning, to see if I would see some Druid's or something. I have psychic abilities.
An excellent, and very interesting set.

You'd certainly see Druids, and you wouldn't need physic abilities. They gather at the Solstices and equinoxes, but mostly the Summer Solstice (it's warmer then) and I expect the ancient druid was a tougher breed than the modernist (despite suspected layers of thermal clothing under their robes).
If you go there, look at other monuments nearby such as Avebury Hill and some of the Hill forts.

Nice photos! Did they not have the pedestrian barriers up? You had unimpeded views. Bravo!
It is very interesting. Hard to imagine how they were built since there were no cranes, etc back then
It’s a great reminder of the ‘old country’. In days long ago when I used to live just outside the town of Totnes, South Devon, I regularly drove past Stonehenge on my regular trips to London.
Have visited there recently. Quite an awesome sight. Appreciate your commentary.
