Dennis,

Having grown up in the 1950's, my mother was emphatic about proper grammar. Many of my distant relatives came from war torn Europe and "Didunt speak so good na English". My folks spoke and wrote very well and their children would also. So to the schools and my teachers.

Personally I would never discount the importance of proper spelling and grammar but with the exception of those involved with legal and many technical documents, the trend is for short cutting spelling and grammar. Hence my comment about emojis symbols and single letter contractions like OMG and LOL.

It seems that at one time, poor grammar used to be the mark of the illiterate, an accent or a cultural hold over. Today poor grammar seems less important, if not an impediment to quick communications.

Given the ever increasing power of word and grammar processing, I believe improvements to spelling and grammar will be due mainly to artificial intelligence. Of course there will always be those individuals fascinated by proper language. It will be their job to make and change the rules periodically.

All that said, this is only my opinion. I probably still would have missed the "angles" for "Angels" while proof reading my comments. Sometime you see what you want to see. :)

I can't agree more with your comments except that in my opinion proper usage of grammar will always be important if only to understand what the speaker or writer is trying to say. I knew you meant angels rather than angles and was just joking with you. But the realistic point is that other people who may not know the old saying of, angels on the head of a pin, may have no idea what you are trying to say.

I also agree completely about missing a word even after looking at it several times. Math is my downfall, even some simple math. I can get something wrong in a math problem and when people look at it for a second and see my mistake it takes me forever to finally, "get", what they are trying to tell me. I look at the same problem several times and it still looks the same. That is what makes us human. I wouldn't change a thing.

Have a Merry Christmas sir,

Dennis

Dennis how would you like it to have people trash you because of your math. It does not feel good at all does it. Thank about that the next time you trash someone because of their spelling of a word wrong or forgetting a word. Or using trash words of a person because you don't like what that person has writing.

If you read my posts regularly you will already have seen that I have often said that if I make a mistake I would WANT someone to call me out on it. I hate seeing posts so badly written regarding spelling, punctuation and grammar that I have to read it a couple of times just to be able to figure out what the poster is trying to tell us. I would hate to be that embarrassed because someone could not figure out what I was trying to say. Yes I am not a math person but am not ever needing to count on my fingers as I see some people doing. But if I screw up here on UHH with regard to something mathematical I would hope someone would call me out on it in a polite manner as I try to do. You might have noticed that when I offer a correction I normally start off with, With due respect, before offering my change or comment.

So my answer is I would definitely want someone to correct me if I post something grammatically incorrect. Someone did correct me in the thread about 3 days ago and I appreciated it. He and I had a great conversation regarding the error and I learned something.

What about you? Would you want to continue making the very same mistake over and over or would you like someone to respectfully point out a minor error? After all you are still free to make the same error even if you find out you are wrong.

As for using trash words the only time I think I use words like that is when I am in The Attic. If you are to choose only me for using trash words there then you aren't paying attention to any other posters.

Now let me ask you; I am not the only person who offers criticism regarding the written word. Others do the same thing. And yet you have decided to single me out for your criticism. Why is that?

Have a Merry Christmas,

Dennis

Our generations is still here to help the numskulls who haven't learned how to speak and spell. I believe some of the teachers misspeak, therefore, the students misspeak. Leaving off letters or using a word completely wrong is a travesty. Once spoken, the audience understands how uneducated is the speaker. I bet I get criticized for that last line. Anyway, when we put together a sentence, make sure you do your best. You are still part of a generation that learned the correct way to organize our thoughts. Share the experience.

I am sorry my friend but I can't totally agree with your thinking in seemingly blaming the teachers. Students spend much more time with family and friends than they do with teachers. My father used to pronounce the word, won't, as, want, as in, I want do it. He knew better but I assume he learned it from his family or friends. Fortunately his three sons did not pick up that habit and we all generally pronounce words and use them accurately in sentences. Perhaps that is from my mother who was not only a teacher but a principal in the school system where she started. However I have seen a couple of people right here in River City use the word, want, for, won't, occasionally. It definitely is not only my dad who picked up that bad habit.

I also don't agree with you as many people in America are from other countries, you know, the melting pot and all, that are not used to speaking and writing in English. My own daughter in law from Mexico speaks pretty well but she sometimes does not use the syntax of words properly in both written and spoken word. We were talking about my granddaughters and she made a statement similar to what I have heard here numerous times, "You guys didn't have distractions as big as a table like THIS days." But she is learning. Right here on the forum are a great many people who, being foreign born, do not speak and write as well as they should. But hopefully they will learn too. It takes time and practice.

But look at our own American born people in some parts of the country; "I aint got none of those". That is accepted language in some parts of America because it is a local dialect if you will.

Before I leave you please allow me to point out a mistake in your first sentence, "Our generations is still
here". Properly written it should be, Our generations ARE still here OR Our generation is still here.

Should you notice errors in my post please feel free to point them out as I don't choose to look like a numbskull either.

Have a wonderful day,

Dennis
