What is a good class to take for using flash and fixed lighting for portraits and exterior shots. I see some shooters exposing for the background and flashing for the subject with great results.
Everything you will ever need to know about using speedlights and some fixed lighting can be found here:

http://www.duenkel.com/The one big takeaway, is that for a key (main directional) light, it needs to be very large - either a large umbrella, softbox or bounce surface. Fill light, should also be similar, but can be a little smaller, hair lights, rim lights, background light (if shooting in a studio setting) can be small, usually snooted, and precisely targeted.
There is a lot to learn, but looking at examples of great lighting will help you understand what constitutes good lighting.
