Once you have edited on a 27" monitor, you will not like the size of a laptop! Also, the new 27 inch iMacs are 5K displays with awesome clarity.

I have the iMac 27 too. You will need to pry it from my cold dead fingers to make me give it up....... Once you use a 27” there is no going back.

FWIW - My preference would be an iMac 27" 5k screen over a laptop anyday, in fact I edit on a 5k 27" with my old 4k iMac as a second screen.

I don't use Macs, but I have a 27 inch 4K PC and a 17 inch laptop. 27 inches is MUCH better for everything I do. The laptop was convenient when I was mass scanning negatives. The scanning process tied up a machine.

IDK but I'm throwing it out as an option because I've been thinking about it. I have a MacBook Pro that I was thinking about attaching an external monitor. Can that be an option?

There's probably some cash value in your current 27". Take advantage of that and buy a new 27". I believe you can still add memory yourself, so you won't have to pay Apple's high memory prices.

Probably very little cash value, but if there is room on the desktop, a cheap Thunderbolt cable (assuming the older iMac has Thunderbolt) can turn the old unit into a 2nd screen, which works out nicely for lots of tasks, when even a 27" screen is just not enough space :)

hmmmm... does this give me a 9k screen?

I edit on a (Windows) laptop, but I have a full size monitor hooked up to it for "good" photo editing. I will edit on the laptop when traveling, but rely on the external monitor when prepping the photos for printing.

I don’t do Mac but I strongly prefer a big calibrated monitor on a dedicated stable table than a squirming mouse less critter.

iMacs provide great screens, more power per $, but sit still. MacBook Pros are cool, but not as fast for the money... but they ARE portable.

The latest 27” iMac and the brand-new 16” MacBook Pro are both worth a look.

Skip the recent 13” and 15” MBPs if you can. Their keyboards are problematic.
