Migration timing and pathways are not always predictable, making travel to a place like Bosque at either end of the migration season difficult to plan. In November California's Sacramento NWR Complex had incredibly high numbers of white geese, both Snow and Ross. At the same time duck hunters were complaining that there were no ducks. I guess that our unusually dry and warm Fall kept birds farther North later than usual.

Beautiful images. You made the most of what you had!

Mike

Lovely! I am headed there next week and your comments about lack of birds is a bit disturbing, but you don't need a lot to attempt to make some decent images. I am very curious about the mention of the Bernardo’s Ladd S. Gordon state waterfowl refuge and the possibility of better opportunities there compared to Bosque. Looking at the maps, it appears to be north of Sorocco, not too far. I am thinking of trying it out and if you would like to share any information on the site(s) I would love to hear about it. Great images and I am looking forward to getting there next week.

Hi, I live less than 2 hours away from the refuges above Sac. I also try to get there a couple of times a year. Have not made it yet this year but planning to get there. Thanks.

Hi. Definitely go to Ladd Gordon. It is about 30 minutes north right off the freeway. A small park but more birds doing more active things. The best, and really only place, to shoot from when I was there was the first stop when you enter, you'll see it to the left. The shots there were, overall, much nicer for background than the shots at Bosque. Maybe by the time you get to Socorro a greater number of birds will have arrived. In past years the first pond on the right before the entrance had a large number of birds and there was always a fly-off. This year few birds and the birds that were there just sort of meandered off, no thrilling fly off.

I'll check it out. Thanks for the information. Apparently Jerry, fstopshere, is going to be there Sunday and will let me know what's up.

These pics are from a recent trip to Bosque del Apache (New Mexico). There were very few birds this year at this time (December). Also, only one smallish flock of Snow Geese. I went for the Sandhill Cranes so I was happy that there were some of the cranes there, but not in as large of a number as the last time I was there, maybe three or four years ago.
