Contemplating buying a tablet - dual purpose

Good day all you knowledgeable Hoggers.

I'm thinking about getting a tablet that will serve a dual purpose - photo editing like the Wacom or X-pen units and being able to download music for my wife when she goes to choir practice, etc.

If I were to go with the Wacom/X-pen units, will she able to go online to download her music via wifi?

On the other hand, if I were to buy a Samsung tablet/I-Pad unit, will I be able to access Lightroom/PSE and work on my pictures like I would using the Wacom/X-pen?

Hopefully you'll understand what I'm asking.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Jay

Good day all you knowledgeable Hoggers. br br I'm... (show quote)

The Wacom and x pen tablets are not items to get on the internet with. They are used for photo editing or art work. the Wacom tablet acts like a mouse but instead of moving a mouse around you use a pan which gives you finer and better control for photo editing. both attach to a normal computer and the computer is what you use to get on the internet and download your music, so the answer to your question is no, neither one will allow you to get on the internet and download music they are strictly photo editing / art editors

I used a Wacom Tablet with Pen for 10 years doing Computer Aided Drafting work
in a MAC Office. We didn't use a mouse for anything. The pen can be, and was,
used just like a mouse.
That was in the late 90's up until 2006.

Take a look at the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. Fantastic combination that will do all you mentioned and a whole universe more.

Tablets such as the iPad and Samsung will not edit pictures using Lightroom CC Classic or Photoshop. They can use the new version of Lightroom CC though and many improvements have been made to this app. I just don't think that using a tablet of this sort is up to the task of storing a lot of images and doing heavy duty editing. But for taking on the road and doing light duty editing they are fine.

I've been using a Microsoft Surface Pro for about 2.5 years as my travel computer and a sit on the couch while watching TV to catch up on email or play a few games on the computer when not vacationing. I purchased it with a "pen" and a mouse. I'm not here to tell you this will replace a Wacom Tablet, but I do use some of the tools within Photoshop with the Pen that I purchased with my Surface Pro, i.e. spot healing, selection tool, a paint brush to name a few. I'm sure since two new generation of Surface Pro have come out since I purchased mine, that the new ones that are out today do lots more then what mine is capable. Not only can you use it as a slim down version of a Wacom tablet, you can run the full versions of Photoshop/Lightroom. It is a fully functional very light weight laptop..i.e. all Microsoft products (word, excel, power point) plus internet capabilities, Skype, Facebook and so on. It has a decent battery life as well. I'm sure by now you can probably purchase it with built in cell service. That function wasn't available when I purchase mine. Rarely do I use the Surface Pro where Wi-Fi isn't available to me so that hasn't been an issue for me...if it is an issue, I just turn my mobile phone into a "Hot Spot", especially if I don't trust the Wi-Fi. I purchased mine with 16 gig memory and 500 SSD drive. It's pretty fast and love the weight while traveling. I can't remember exactly, but somewhere around 2 lbs. Good luck with your selection.

I respectfully disagree. You can now run Photoshop and Lightroom on the iPad, as well as many other interesting photo manipulation programs.

The on-board storage is somewhat limited, true, but that's easily solved by storing images in the cloud or moving them to a desktop or laptop computer.

Here are the specs to run both apps on any computer. I did read that in 2019 there will be a full blown version for an iPad Pro but only Photoshop, and I'm sure that it's a watered down version. There is no way it can be as robust as the version running on a PC or full sized Mac. If it does, it will be SLOW.

Lightroom minimum specifications for macOS
Processor: Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Operating system: macOS v10.12 (Sierra), macOS v10.13 (High Sierra), or macOS v10.14 (Mojave)
RAM: 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
Hard disk space: 2 GB of available hard-disk space (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
Graphics processor acceleration requirements: AMD: macOS 10.12, macOS 10.13, or macOS 10.14 with Metal support.Intel: macOS 10.12, macOS 10.13, or macOS 10.14 with Metal support.NVIDIA: macOS 10.12, macOS 10.13, or macOS 10.14 with Metal support.OpenGL 3.3-capable video adapter for GPU-related functionality.1 GB Video RAM (VRAM). 2 GB of dedicated VRAM (4 GB recommended) for large, high-resolution monitors, such as 4K- and 5K-resolution monitors.OpenGL 3.3–capable video adapter for GPU-related functionality.

I have Photoshop and Lightroom on my iPad Pro, and PS doesn't seem watered down or slow. I don't really use Lightroom.

By the way, there is also an excellent photo app for iPad called Affinity, if you don't care for Photoshop/Lightroom.

I love my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Apple's support is just excellent too. However, if you need to really overhaul a photo you probably need Photoshop and a good computer.

Tablets, Apple or Samsung, will only be able use Lightroom CC or a trimmed down version of Photoshop. This is one of the main reasons I went with a 2-in-1 laptop. My particular model is the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd Gen which is a bit expensive but it does well and uses the Wacom technology. There are less expensive models by Lenovo and others and I recommend you look into the 2-in-1 laptops as I believe they will meet all of your requirements.
