I’d like to throw a little bit of common sense back into this discussion. I bought a mirrorless Z6 a few months ago as a test to see if it could replace my D3s for ultra high ISO situations like nighttime soccer and the very dimly lit gym that I shoot volleyball and basketball in. And so far it has performed admirably to the point that I have rested the D3s. The images are a lot brighter and colors are more vibrant and true to life. I think there is also an improvement in sharpness. But do I attribute this to the mirror less technology?? Not indeed. It’s more likely due to the upgrade of the sensor and the Expeed 6 computer programming chip. I tried the D5 and it’s not as good. I’m on a retiree budget so I’ll not get the D6. Im very happy with the Z6—not because it’s mirror less but because of the improvements in the image processing. I couldn’t care less about the missing mirror. So there are other reasons to try the newer stuff.

Would it be a fair statement to say the better the photographer the less technically superior equipment he will need? Or is that an over simplification? Just musing a bit.

I think that’s over simplification. The better photographer will know how to better use the technically superior equipment. IMO

I’d like to throw a little bit of common sense bac... (show quote)

I would also conjecture that given the same lens and sensor, and assuming the DSLR body was fine tuned with the lens, that there would be no difference between the DSLR and mirrorless when shooting raw.

Successful photographers don't focus on their mistakes. They discard their old equipment and buy something new.

This reply assumes that everyone shoots the way you describe, which is not the case. There is a possibility that sharp and quality do go together and that a mirrorless camera can increase the possibility on both counts. You seem rather adamantly opposed to a mirrorless camera. I'm of the mind that there are many possibilities to get a quality image.

On the contrary, I have two mirrorless cameras and have given away all my DSLR's. I am simply making the point that "sharpness" is only one, and often a minor one of the characteristics that make a good image. Composition, lighting, subject matter, balance, contrast, exposure, angle of view, just to mention a few, may be greater contributors to quality than sharpness.

Nikon's Z50 is the beginning of the end for the entry level DSLR. Smaller, cheaper, better performing. Nikon has offered something to cut down Fuji and Sony's piece of the market. I might even bite at the price it is being offered. There certainly is no reason to look at a 3xxx or 5xxx Nikon any more!

I bought a used D3200 for its live HDMI output allowing my visually impaired mother to look at old photos on a large screen television. As a bonus, I found out these cameras also take decent photographs and happen to work with my old NIKKOR lenses from the 60's. But you have a point--I do need to learn to spend money. A Z or Fujifilm is only a matter of time.

I don't know who led you to believe you are photography's Will Rogers. Don't believe it!

Long-time Nikon, but I have a Sony a6XXX series camera.
I really like the electronic viewfinder. I can change the settings when I am shooting without taking the camera from my eye. That is a huge advantage to me.
I really like the small size esp for travel. The only problem is that the lenses are not in as good supply as the DSLR's, but you have to give up something.
