New treatment of interior space.

"Critique is ok"

Here is some of the latest in the adventure with myself and VADA. I am an artist and not really a technician for lighting. I tend to think creatively, the inspiration was that of walls and flat surfaces, you know 'interior space' (Foucault). My mind began to come to certain notions that these were such solid surfaces that they were only to be projected upon. Making a solid surface appear to be translucent, by projecting shadows such as gobos or cookaloris upon the solid surface.

As an alternative why to such projections on surfaces, thus letting the bounding surfaces become translucent? And so I came to a different idea of interior space and surfaces. Thus the translucent idea of interior space. So, strictly speaking the use of a cookaloris and such are now in a completely different medium of presentation. The basic notion is there but now it moves in a different direction.

To make these images I have decided to not go the 'traditional' route (so what else is new!) and explore new ideas of 'color balance' and image structure. Frankly this should be a blast because it allows for the departure from traditional studio image making.

The photographs are done with incandescent lights. The front lights, those in the space with the subject is a 1930's Photogenic light like what modern workers reference as a beauty dish. To help fill in shadows slightly a 250 watt light in a Larson 42 inch soft box is in use. The rear to the subject is a hand cut 'cookaloris' illuminated by a fresnel 5 inch instrument with 500 watt lamp. The side light to the right of the image is a 500 watt Lowell box light focused about mid point.

The camera is a Sony digital with Leica 28mm R f2.8 lens on f 11, zoned focused. The Sony had 'issues' as the body had become 'stupid' and locked the shutter speed to 1/30 second. Apparently this had something to do with the remote release. I will say it, I HATE DIGITAL CAMERAS! These toys get in my way so often, but I'm stuck with them.

Hi, Timmers. I don't want to critique an image where I don't fully understand the motif. It is interesting for sure but frankly the fine art milieu is somewhat above my "paygrade". I like the warm monochromatic tone. I like cookies and projected patterns- nice!

Here I thought I was the only guy who still has an original beauty light when they still called them pan-parabolic with a central deflector.I also hav the Photogenic model with the spring

Perhas some else woud like to critique this image- I'm just enjoying it for waht it is! Very unsophisticated of me! I'm more into traditional portraiture. I don't want to opine on something I don't know about, it wouldn't be fair to the maker!

Thanks for the all the data and your concept.

Nice sitting description as the "pan-parabolic with a central deflector" lamp. It is just heaven! It uses a mogo lamp base, has a center rod to allow the lamp to slide up and down and the central deflector is also adjustable as well. I found that industrial suppliers for the lamps (bulbs) can supply both frosted and clear lamps. Not true 3200K color lamps but the options are amazing.

Of silly historic reference the last of the Indian Jones films (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) in the early scenes were filmed using these old lights (1K and 5K) for the night scenes, they even included the lights in the sense.

These are amazing lights, I love working with them. I was so lucky to have been gifted these years ago.
