I just use the Nikon ML-L3 remote. Only issue is it has to be pointed at the front of the camera. That said, I seldom find the need for a wireless remote. I have a wired one as well. I'm assuming it will work with the D850.

The ml-l3 doesn’t work with the D850.

I'm not a Nikonite, but doesn't the Snapbridge app do that using your phone? https://petapixel.com/2017/12/01/nikon-snapbridge-app-redesigned-full-manual-control-new-ui/

And it gives you the ability to actually see what the camera sees in live view.

Besides the RFN4s, Nikon recommends a Wireless Remote Adapter Kit. The Nikon WR-10/WR-T10 - A10. Price is $200. Not cheap.

The ml-l3 is the most commonly used wireless for some compatible Nikon DX cameras. The remotes with wire can be just as convenient, as you stated. And, it will not work on the full frame D850.

I've used several off-brand remotes, and they've all worked fine. Just be sure the one you buy has the features you want.

I'm amazed that so many Luddites have expensive cameras. Your best remote is your cell phone!

Ihave a Vello Freewave Plus 2.4ghz radio remote purchased New on eBay from a reputable seller seller for $32 including shipping! Unit works GREAT !!..No issues good for up to 300 ft, and doesn't need to be line of site to activate. Nikon's top models have done away with the ML-L3 infrared system on their newer dslrs.

That's the one I use with both my D500 and D850. Good unit.

Does the D850 use WMU? That’s what I use with my D7200 and it’s great. For my D500 I have to use SnapBridge. It works but I prefer WMU.

Vello had a wireless remote that mounts on top of flash and uses two triple AAA or AA batteries and the remote is also wireless. Connects to camera with a cable from the unit that mounts on the flash with a cable that plugs into camera. The remote has a range of 50' and you can use this as a wireless timer. They make it for all the cameras and it sells for around $50.00 for both pieces. Check with B&H for the Vello wireless flash and remote timer unit.
