Nikon D850 Blowout problem. (WhiteOut)

My D850 does something that I don't understand. I was taking family pics out in my yard this weekend and while several photos looked normal, then, without any change in my camera setup, it would take the next few pics totally blown out (white out). It has done this before. I can usually recover the darker objects in Lightroom but the whiteout objects in the photo are gone. Then it will go back to taking normal photos as one expects.

Sometimes overcast light changes in a blink of eye, without me realize it’s happening....

What settings are you using including how is the camera metering?

Have you looked at the EXIF data and compared the blown out photos to the good ones?

I have accidently turned on or left the bracketing feature on and this would happen. 1st and 2nd photo might be fine but the next one or so would be blown out depending on the settings.

It does sound a bit like bracketing, as Cindy mentioned. If you don't see any issue when reviewing your camera settings, post a photo here, with "store original" checked prior to clicking add attachment.

One additional check would be to be sure you are in matrix metering. If you are in spot, pointing at something black would lighten the overall scene. I'm with the bracketing idea though, but you'd think one would notice 3-5 shots in a row.

Without samples or EXIF data it's difficult to say. My guess that you had the meter on SPOT mode.

Ruherek,
Just send it to me and I’d be more than happy to test it for you!
(Just kidding! If I ever had to replace the D810 I use, the 850 would be my pick).
As mentioned, post a photo with the “Store Original” boxed checked and wait for more informed tips.
We are all guessing without that info.

I agree, it does seem you had bracketing turned on. HOWEVER....Consider testing out the spot plus * (Highlight Weighted) exposure setting of the D850. In this setting mode the camera will give preference to highlights no matter where you have the spot metering icon placed in the photo to be taken. It can help keep from blowing out the bright areas in the photo.

It will make other areas a bit dark, but in PP you can draw out the details - assuming it was shot using RAW.

I now have food for thought from your suggestions. I would like to upload two pics, one normal and one abnormal to show. Not finding such link yet.

Open a “Quote Reply” to a post and check the bottom for this option.
It won’t work with a quick reply.

You don’t need to use “quote reply” but you need to clock “reply” under a post. You can’t use “quick reply”.

Ruherek,
I forgot to tell you to check the "Store Original" box within that red area circled.
It loads the metadata so we can read all the exposure info, including what you had for lunch that day.
It's not too late to go back to that one and check the box if you do it within an hour after it's posted.
