I always love the looks of concentration on the kids faces. Nice set.

Hi. Nice and close.

On the shooting (#2), you might try to get under the basket with a shorter lens (I use a 18-80, with a lot shot around 50). This gives you the faces and action vs backs. You get both shooting and defensive action. Look back a Jules’s BB posts. Somehow, he gets right under the basket!!!

That said, how close you can get to the bottom of the key depends on the venue. This gym looks like it has about 3 feet to the baseline wall, so this is likely not possible and I might shoot from the corner with my 50-150. From the corner, I get a 50/50 chance of the action facing me, and with the reach to 150 on my crop body, can get to generally mid court center)

Keep shooting, and post more. I like the emotion and player interaction you are getting

Thank you so much for all that!! I was thinking of taking the 7D with the 50mm 1.8 for under the basket. Just wondering about taking 2. I like the 200 on the 7D mrk 11 for the opposite court shooting. Thanks again David, appreciate it.

Better answers will come from our more experienced pro/semi-pro shooters, but I can say of all the pictures parents downloaded of my BB shots, almost none were from the far court with their backs to the camera. The more I shot, the more I tried to migrate to under the basket (where the court allowed). Generally was finding that the 70-200 was too long (on the D7200), that I did not need the lower half of the 18-80, and was unable to fill the frame from beyond 25 feet at the 80, hence the addition of the older 50-150 2.8. Was the right tool for this job.

Face and eyes are the key. You know this already as you have already commented on getting the emotion of the players. If you can’t get under the basket, suggest to try with the 50 for a qtr or two and see if you like the results.

Try the 1.8 You need light, but you also need enough DOF as the players are usually not in the same plane. I forget if you are shooting FF or Crop, but on my crop D7200, 50mm at 15ft at f1.8 gives about 2 ft total DOF. workable, but your focus must be dead on. You might want to edge up to 2.2 to 2.8.

It of course depends on the venue and how much light you have.

Jules and others have more experience in baseline shooting than I. For the last several years (as my kids interests have “evolved”, I have been more outdoor than in.
